Expert faculty, outstanding science facilities, state-of-the-art laboratory instrumentation provide an outstanding setting for undergraduate study.
Science on Display
We make science inviting and transparent, literally putting it on display. Here youll see students take the role of scientists, as observation entwines with engagement in a hands-on learning experience. This is the Marygrove standard, combining research-infused teaching with interdisciplinary learning, enhanced by our state-of-the art classrooms and teaching laboratories.
Infusing student research throughout the science curriculum in their day-to-day work, students:
How we learn...
- ask themselves questions
- assimilate information from interactions with others
- devise explanations
- design experiments
- identify potential sources of experimental error
- perform observations
- effectively communicate their findings, and
- connect to the world beyond campus.
Just-in-Time & Personalized
The Science and Mathematics Department is a place where students are given the tools to learn, to carve out their own path. Curriculum enhancements are numerous, with built-in flexible tracks for students interested in health care, industry, or teaching. Class time is hands on, with collaborative learning, inquiry-driven laboratory exercises and Just-in-Time Teaching methodsa foundational theory that uses you and your fellow classmates questions as the drive of the course. Questions are explored in class through our smart classroom technology to better engage you and make you part of the lesson.
Freedom to Explore
Courses run on exploration inspired by your thirsts and needs rather than a designated lecture. Two to three hour time blocks are flexibly taught, allowing the lesson to progress anywhere needed in discussion as well as physical location. It allows direct teacher-student engagement where your questions and ideas direct the course and not the other way around. Your engagement is vital not only for your learning but the progression of the course, class, and community.
The Science and Mathematics Department provides professional training at the undergraduate level to serve as a foundation for pre-professional in preparation for careers in dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, and veterinary medicine. Other students have gone on to graduate school to pursue advanced degrees in biology, chemistry, and forensic science. In addition, the department has successfully prepared well-trained graduates who can immediately enter the job market.
Science in Community
We raise scientists to work in the community with the understanding that you will contribute as an urban leader. We build character in our students to create a more just society and bring out the best our city has to offer. Our Science programs transition you from education to career flexibility with the hopes of nurturing the future scientific leaders of the Metropolitan Detroit area.
More and more, science will determine the road into the future. The SAM department is helping to build that road through its distinctive, student-oriented teaching and learning environment that offer students the opportunity to learn science by doing science.
