Assistant Professor Of Modern Languages (Spanish & French)

Specialization:   20th Century Detective Fiction in Argentina and discourse analysis

Professor Torres received her Ph.D. in Romance Languages (Spanish and French), from Wayne State University, MI (2005); her M.A. in French from Bowling Green State University, OH (1993); a B.E.F. (Brevet d’Études Françaises) Institut de Touraine, Tours, France (1991-92) and B.A. in French and Japanese from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN (1986). 

Before coming to Marygrove College, Professor Torres taught at Wayne State University, the University of Michigan Residential College, and Bowling Green State University.  Her interests include Second Language Acquisition and teaching methods, use of Technology in the Classroom, Spanish for the professions, and teaching translation, film and culture.  In addition to reviewing Foreign Language teaching textbooks, developing online courses, and teaching, she has presented the following papers: “Women’s Empowerment:  Transforming Cultural Values in Betty la fea” at the 2007 Marygrove College Academic Symposium; “A word a day keeps the dictionary away…” at the 2007 Michigan Translators and Interpreters Network Workshop held at Marygrove; “The Culture of Death in Pedro Almodovar’s Volver” at the 2008 Michigan Academy conference at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo; “Culture and Death in Lorca’s La casa de Bernarda Alba and Almodovar’s Volver”  at the 2008 Kentucky Foreign Language Conference) University of Kentucky, Lexington; “Borges did it: Breaking the Walls of the Real” at  the 2009 Marygrove College Academic Symposium; “Borges and a new paradigm for Detective Fiction” at the 2010 Kentucky Foreign Language Conference, University of Kentucky, Lexington.
