On the 15th anniversary of the Contemporary American Authors Lecture Series, President Glenda D. Price announced a $100,000 gift from Lillian and Donald J. Bauder that will endow the public lecture/reading segment of the Series.
The free public reading will officially be named The Bauder Contemporary American Authors Lecture. Each year, the series features a critically respected African American writer. The list of visiting authors includes Gloria Naylor, Mary Helen Washington, Paule Marshall, John Edgar Wideman, Sherley Anne Williams, Octavia E. Butler, Jamaica Kincaid, Rita Dove, Virginia Hamilton, Ernest Gaines, Merle Collins, Lucille Clifton, Toi Derricotte, Edwidge Danticat, and Cornelius Eady.
"This lecture series is a signature event for Marygrove College," Dr. Price said at the dinner preceding the 2003 reading by poet Cornelius Eady. "It brings important and provocative works to the public to be understood, interpreted, and enjoyed. We are grateful to the Bauders for helping us to ensure that the public reading continues."
"African American literature has enriched our lives over a long period of time," said Dr. Lillian Bauder. "It brings about a particular understanding of the human condition—its beauty, ugliness, joy, and sorrow—that is both spiritual and mysterious. Donald and I are proud to support this wonderful series at this great school."
Dr. Lillian Bauder is vice president, corporate affairs of Masco Corporation and president, Masco Corporation Foundation. She is a director of Comerica Inc., DTE Energy Company, ArtServe Michigan, Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall, Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the Detroit Institute of Arts, where she serves as vice chairman of the board. Dr. Bauder also chairs the board of The Skillman Foundation. Donald J. Bauder is retired.
The Series, which includes classes on the visiting author's works, a writing contest, and a master class with the author for area high school and college students, will retain the name Marygrove College Contemporary American Authors Lecture Series.
