Dear Classmates of 1961,

We are officially golden! For better or worse, we cannot take ourselves to the bank and be given our weight in gold. But we do plan to celebrate our lives, and all we have done on September 15-18, 2011 in Detroit -- on that campus in Motown where we all got our start! What better place to celebrate! Homecoming 2011 cannot happen without us, without you. We are the stars!

But we (who are writing this letter) are not in charge. We are the messengers. You are in charge. In a very real way, each of you and, all of you, will decide what we will do and how we will do it. Part of the schedule is planned by the College and part will be planned by you. A list of the college-sponsored events is included.

But before we can think about what to plan, we need to find some of our “lost” classmates. A number of us have already been searching for them and some have already been found. Any information you can share about any of our MIAs will be a great help. Please see the attached list. Maybe you know an MIA’s married name, husband’s first name, or children’s names, or where she lived even a number of years ago. It all helps. Please be our Sherlock Holmes and report any clues you may have.

With the speed of the Internet and its widespread use, we should be able to exchange information very efficiently, and we plan to use email to do so. Approximately half of you received this message by email, and the rest by regular mail, which is expensive and slow. If you received this by regular mail, it would be fantastic if you could send us your email address, if you have one. If you don’t use email, would you please ask a husband, son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, sister, brother, (get the idea?) to be our link to you? We won’t need to communicate very often, maybe once a month. If that still doesn’t work for you, then we will definitely stay in touch using the regular mail.

Diane Puhl, Marygrove’s Director of Alumni Relations, has offered to help arrange for a block of rooms at a group rate at a great hotel. While details are not yet signed, we believe the Hyatt Regency Dearborn will host our out-of-town grads. For those who did not grow up in Detroit, the Hyatt Regency Dearborn is located in a safe and convenient area, near the superhighways, and it has the added advantage for those flying that it is between Marygrove and the airport. More details on that later.

Most reunion classes put together a memory book, as we have for past reunions. Please start to think back over the past 50 years and pick some of the things you have done; things that represent your life.  Can you tell your story in 250 words? How about a nice recent photo of you? Preferably, a face shot and a .jpg. More on electronic files  and preferred picture sizes later, too.

And another thing: Who in our class might Marygrove honor as a Distinguished Alumni? The award is given Friday night at the Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony. It would be great to have one of us be in the spotlight for having achieved something special. Start thinking about those with whom you have kept in contact and what any one of them has done. The criteria and referral from can be downloaded from Marygrove’s web site.

Please help us by responding as soon as possible, and, if you do, we promise to spend our time processing all the good information you send and not bother you again until after the first of the year. Looking forward to hearing from you soon,

Marie Woodall Handley
