What better way to develop skills and enhance your résumé than by completing an internship in another country?

Internships provide the opportunity for students to apply what they have
learned in the classroom to real work situations, develop skills, and
gain experience in their chosen fields before graduation. Living abroad
leads to an increased sense of independence, adaptability, cultural understanding,
and the ability to cope with new and different situations. Combine the
two experiences and the result is an overseas internship - the opportunity
for students to develop both the personal and professional qualities that
employers look for when hiring new professionals.
All students, regardless of major, can complete an internship during a semester abroad or during the summer months. During the semester, students typically take two academic courses while also working part-time at their internship site. The internship is considered part of their full-time course load. During the summer, students typically spend two to three months working full-time for a company or organization. In both cases, students receive credit for their internship experience.
Students are placed in internships based on their academic background and preparation. Internships can be arranged in areas such as:
- International business
- Education
- Government
- Social service
- Communication
- Marketing
- Health
- Women's Studies
- The arts
Internship placements are generally located in countries where English is the primary language. However, students with a significant background in a foreign language can request placements in non-English speaking countries. In addition, internships are typically completed during junior year or the following summer to allow students adequate preparation in their academic field.
Employers seek graduates that can think critically, can appreciate cultural differences, and have a global perspective. By interning abroad, you can become that graduate! For more information on overseas internships contact the Office of Study Abroad.
