FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT STUDY ABROAD
1. What is the Marygrove College Study Abroad Program?
The Study Abroad Program offers students the opportunity to expand their academic, social, and cultural perspectives through living, studying, interning or volunteering overseas. The Office staff assists students with selecting and applying to an overseas program, arranging financial aid, finding scholarships to apply for, choosing courses, and pre-departure planning. The staff also provides support for students while they are abroad and when they return to campus.

2. Where can I go to study, intern, volunteer or work overseas?
You can go just about anywhere! The OSA works with a number of other colleges and organizations to provide students with a wide range of options in terms of location and type of program. Many programs do not require knowledge of a foreign language before you go, as they offer courses taught in English.

3. How much money does it cost and what are some of the ways I can pay for it?
Program costs vary, but many are comparable to spending a semester living and studying at Marygrove. Some programs may even be less expensive. You can apply for study abroad scholarships to help cover the cost of your program. And, all of the financial aid that you receive for study on campus (except for work-study) can be applied toward study abroad. The OSA can help you with this process.

4. How long would I be overseas?
This is up to you! Depending on your academic program and individual situation, you may choose to spend as little as 10 days overseas. Or you may decide to stay a little longer. There are a number of two to 12 week programs available during the spring and summer. Or, you can choose to spend a semester or entire academic year studying or interning abroad. If you are a foreign language student, we recommend that you spend at least four weeks overseas in order to have enough time to begin developing your language skills.

5. Can I get credit for studying overseas?
Yes! With advanced planning and pre-approval of courses, students can receive credit for classes and internships taken overseas.

6. What kinds of classes would I take while studying abroad?
You can take courses that help fulfill major or minor requirements, foreign language classes and/or courses not available on the Marygrove campus. The OSA staff will work with you and your academic advisor to help you choose an overseas program with classes that meet your academic requirements and personal interests. With advanced planning, almost any student can study abroad without delaying their graduation date.

7. Who would I live with while I study overseas?

Housing arrangements vary from program to program. Depending on the program you choose, you may live with native students in an on-campus residence hall or in apartments close to campus. Some programs offer the opportunity to live with a host family.

8. When would I go?
If you are planning to spend a semester or academic year abroad, we recommend that you go during your junior year. However, depending on your academic program, you may opt to go the second semester of your sophomore year or the first semester of your senior year. Short-term spring and summer programs are often open to students who have just completed their freshman year. Students may opt to participate in the Travel Seminar program at any point during their time at Marygrove.

9. Who is eligible to study abroad?
Typically, any Marygrove College undergraduate student in good academic standing is eligible to participate in a study abroad program. Students from other institutions can also apply to participate in a Marygrove sponsored program. Some programs are available to graduate students as well.

10. Who will help me arrange all of the details so that I can go abroad?
The Marygrove College Office of Study Abroad! Call, email or stop by the office to find out how YOU can live, study, intern, travel or volunteer abroad!
