Greece: Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea

Ancient temple
Seminar leaders: Dena Scher & Sally Welch
Program dates: May 15 - 24, 2008

The melodies of the bouzouki. The land of gods & goddesses. The streets where Homer & Euripides walked. Mezedes at a ouzeri - the joys that await you in Greece!

This ten-day program will start in Athens—Directly from the airport we will start our tour with the Temple of Zeus and a guided tour of the Agora (ancient public market place) which might put you in a shopping mood!. In Athens, you will marvel at the famous Acropolis, home of the Parthenon. Erected circa 440 BCE, the Parthenon is dedicated to the ancient goddess, Athena, and is the premier example of ancient Greek architecture.  You will also travel back in time to view the Olympic stadium.  Our final day in Athens includes a trip to the temple at Delphi, home of the ancient oracle—the modern oracle advises you to travel to Athens & the Islands with the Marygrove travel seminar!!

After Athens, it’s off on a 4 day cruise to Mykonos, Patmos, Rhodes, Crete, Santorini and the beautiful main land port of Kusadasi, Turkey. Besides being a beautiful Greek island, Crete was home to the Minoan culture, the first European civilization dating back 5,000 years. Archeological sites at Knossos will open our minds to snake goddesses and the ancient sport of bull jumping. Our island hopping continues with the spectacular volcanic island of Santorini—Perched atop the volcanic caldera, the town of Fira will be our base for exploration of this marvelous island. In Santorini, there will be free time for shopping and soaking up the pleasant Mediterranean sun.

Our cruise returns to Athens and the mainland for free exploration. Our final day includes a trip to the temple at Cape Sounion, a beautiful promontory overlooking the Aegean Sea.
