This travel seminar is designed for introduce students to the world of surprise and wonder of both England and Scotland. It consists of two parts: on-campus preparatory classes on both English and Scottish history and culture/literature and a ten-day visit to London, Yorkshire, and Edinburgh. London is a cosmopolitan melting pot known for its theatre, history, museums, and markets; Yorkshire and Scotland are also famous for their rich cultural history. Through this educational travel, students will have precious opportunities to explore cultural similarities and differences among these places. They will immerse themselves in historical and cultural London. Once in London, students will visit some of London’s most famous cultural landmarks including London theatres and Shakespeare’s Globe, as well as such iconic sites as St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, and the Tower of London. In Yorkshire, student will visit Hadrian’s Wall at Housesteads, York Minster, and Bronte Parsonage Museum. In Edinburgh, they will explore Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile, and Old Town.
Academic Component: This academic seminar will explore three lively places in terms of their history and culture, thus ultimately developing some sort of comparative perspectives on these closely inter-connected cities in the course of a long history of the British Empire.
Before the travel, students will read selected works of Charles Dickens, Virginia Woolf, Emily Brontë, Charlotte Brontë, and Walter Scott, as well as general introductory books on the places they will visit. During the travel, students will feel and sense the ways in which these writers and other artists expressed their lived experiences.
Courses and Credits:
Students receive three credits for this course. Credit earned is applied toward the 300 level interdisciplinary general education requirement in Global Awareness.
