REVEREND WENDELL ANTHONY DELIVERS

MARYGROVE COLLEGE COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS MAY 12

Detroit, MI, May 1, 2007 – Reverend Wendell Anthony, president of the Detroit Branch NAACP and pastor of Fellowship Chapel in Detroit, will deliver the commencement address to the Marygrove College Class of 2007 at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit on Saturday, May 12, at 1 p.m.

Carolyn Miller, graduating with a double bachelor’s degree in English and political science, will represent the undergraduate Class of 2007, speaking on Marygrove’s core values of competence, compassion and commitment. Carolyn received the Outstanding Student Leadership Award and Outstanding Work-Study Student in 2006 and 2007, and is president of Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society.

Master’s student Dana Parker, receiving her Social Justice Master’s degree, is the graduate student representative. Dana is founder of Dig My Roots Foundation, a non-profit organization that assists in enhancing the lives of individuals diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses. She will discuss the elements of success after Marygrove.

Marygrove will present an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters to Reverend Anthony and to Jay Harrison, president of Harrison Technology Consulting. The Board of Trustees will award the Theresa Maxis Award for Social Justice to the Matrix Theatre Company of Detroit.

A native of St. Louis, Reverend Anthony was educated in the Detroit Public School system and graduated from Wayne State University with a B.A. in political science and Marygrove with an M.A. in pastoral ministry. Reverend Anthony is a Certified Social Worker with the State of Michigan. He became the Pastor of Fellowship Chapel in December of 1986 and was installed as Senior Pastor in February of 1987.

He was recently re-elected to an unprecedented 8th term at the Detroit Branch NAACP, the country’s largest branch.

Jay Harrison is president of Harrison Technology Consulting and president and chief technology officer of Internet Operations Center.

He is a nationally recognized authority on Internet security, disaster recovery and business-to-business process automation. He is a board member of the Detroit Charter School for Industrial Arts. In 2002, Mr. Harrison was appointed to the board of directors of Automation Alley, Oakland County’s premier technology consortium.

Marygrove’s 2007 Theresa Maxis Award for Social Justice Honoree, the Matrix Theatre Company, has deep connections with schools, social services, and residents in Southwest Detroit. It uses the transformative power of original theatre to change lives, build communities and foster social justice. Matrix creates opportunities for children, youth, adults and elders, especially from challenged or isolated populations, to become the creators, producers, and audience of original theatre. Shaun Nethercott, executive director, will accept the award.
