love of Marygrove is beautifully expressed in their donation of time, talent
and inspiration. Our students, today and
tomorrow, will be the ones who will really benefit from their creativity. We welcome the Metro Detroit community to
view and bid on these great original works of art for their homes.”
In Fall 2004, Dr. Price challenged the creativity of
faculty, students, alumni and local artists to come up with a way to add value
to these plain brown chairs for the owner and the College. Some of these chairs date back to Marygrove’s
opening in 1927 and were manufactured by High Point Bending and Chair Co. of
Among the art pieces are “My
Love” by local designer and Marygrove Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters,
Dominic Pangborn; the Smooth JazzFest 2005 Artist Chair by Smooth Jazz V98.7;
and Mexicaniconism by Nora Chapa Mendoza.
The pieces are as varied in theme as the artists who submitted them. Several of the chairs are on display in Metro
Detroit: In Downtown Birmingham, at Au
Chocolat, Labelle Provence, Imelda’s Closet, Oliver’s and Art Loft; and in
Detroit at the Children’s Museum.
