Social Justice Program To Revitalize Advocacy Roles

Beginning fall 2004, Marygrove College will offer a master’s degree in Social Justice for those interested in learning and promoting social change.  Students will analyze and reflect on the thoughts, values, assumptions, and actions that maintain the economic, political and cultural structures that shape our lives.  The program will also help them  build skills to transform these structures toward a more just society.

“At a time when we face political, economic and social turmoil on a level that we have not seen since the 1960s, it is important that we develop a new cadre of individuals who are willing to confront the problems of society,” says Alfred L. Cooke, PhD, Dean of the Education Department.

The 36 credit hour program will pull students from non-profit management; politics,  government, international, and multicultural affairs; public interest law and advocacy; and the media.  Courses will focus on leadership, collaboration and team building, the environment, media, economic structures, community empowerment, fundraising, and values in society.

Classes will meet one weekend per month for 15 months on campus.  Five hours of group interaction off campus is also required.
