Detroit, Michigan— Marygrove College will
offer a new online course, “Sociological
Theories,” to help students discover explanations as to why the world is the
way it is. The course will identify the
forces that shape human experience and determine the nature of societies. It will encompass all aspects of human
social life, ranging from the nature of civilization or the origins of
capitalism to the processes of human consciousness and the development of the
self.
“Although
thinkers and philosophers have striven for centuries to understand the nature
of society, sociology as an academic discipline got off to a relatively late
start,” said Laura Colmenero-Chilberg, assistant professor of sociology at
Marygrove College. “This course
presents an overview of the most important and well-known social theorists from
the past 300 years through present day.”
The
course will include a variety of learning activities including
online discussions and exercises, as well as several meetings that will be
determined by the schedules of the students in the class.
