Detroit, Michigan--Fifteen students, age 14-18, from the metropolitan Detroit are collecting clues throughout Marygrove College this week, trying to figure out “Who Murdered the Music Professor?” The students are attending a Crime Scene Investigation Camp, which is part of the Kids College Camp program, and are learning how DNA fingerprints, pathology (the examination of body tissues and fluids), toxicology (the study of poisons and drugs), as well as biology and chemistry help investigators identify crime suspects. Students will also visit a morgue to view a cadaver. The camp runs through Friday, June 25 at which time they will reveal the culprit.
“This is the first time we’ve offered this camp as a way to introduce forensics as a possible career choice,” says Laura Colmenero-Chilberg, assistant professor. “Forensic scientists may be doctors, law enforcement officials, and researchers, but all of them use lots of techniques to investigate criminal cases, fraud and regulatory measures.”
The Kids’ College Camp program offers a variety of activities for hundreds of young people age 4-18 in music, dance, theatre, cheerleading, basketball, computer information, and tutoring in math and reading. All classes except for the computer camps are held on campus through the end of July. Registration is still open in some camps. Call 313-927-1241 for information.
