The Association of Black Psychologists Host Juneteenth Celebration
DETROIT, MI – The Metro-Detroit Chapter of the Association of Black Psychologists co-sponsored by the Department of Student Life/Activities at Marygrove College will host the Sixth Annual Juneteenth Celebration on Sunday, June 6 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. It will be held at Marygrove College, 8425 W. McNichols Rd. in Detroit in the Madame Cadillac Building, main dining room.
The Juneteenth celebration will include poetry, storytelling, cultural dancing, food sampling, music and a marketplace with various African American vendors.
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration marking the end of slavery. On June 19, 1865, union troops landed in Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the slaves were free. This announcement came more than two years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. However, this executive order, which claimed to have ended slavery, had little impact due to the lack of enforcement.
Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and planning for the future. For reservations or more information, call Dr. Angela C. May at (313) 319-8145. ###
