Marygrove College Welcomes Award-Winning Poet for Women’s History Month Celebration

 

Detroit, Michigan--As part of Marygrove College’s Women’s History Month Celebration, Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society will present an Evening Coffee   House on Friday, March 19, 7:00-9:00 p.m., featuring Sonia Sanchez.  Sanchez will deliver an oration of inspiration, hope and possibilities. The event will take place on campus, 8425 W. McNichols, in Alumnae Hall.

 

Sanchez is an award-winning poet, activist, national and international lecturer on women’s liberation, peace and racial justice.  She is also author of over 16 books, including her most recent, Shake Loose My Skin (2000), and other notable works including Homegirls and Handgrenades (1984), Under a Soprano Sky (1987), Wounded in the House of a Friend (1997), Does Your House Have Lions? (1997), and Like the Singing Coming Off the Drums (1998).

 

Sanchez has lectured at more than 500 universities and colleges in the United States, and has traveled extensively, reading her poetry in Africa, Cuba, England, the Caribbean and the People’s Republic of China. Her poetry also appeared in the movie Love Jones.  She is a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lucretia Mott Award for 1984, the Outstanding Arts Award from the Pennsylvania Coalition of 100 Black Women, and she received the Langston Hughes Poetry Award for 1999.

 

The evening will also feature poetry, music, and storytelling from Marygrove’s current and former students, faculty and guest poets. A booksigning and reception will follow.
