DETROIT, Mich., Jan. 31, 2010— The Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) and Marygrove College today announced the transfer of ownership of buildings and land of the Marygrove College campus from the IHM Sisters to the Marygrove College Board of Trustees.

“This transfer offers benefits for both parties,” said Sister Janet Ryan, IHM, a member of the IHM Leadership Council. “This agreement provides the college with ownership of the buildings and land, and at the same time, benefits the congregation by relieving it of legal obligations and by assuring Marygrove‘s educational mission as part of its IHM legacy.”

Marygrove College’s undergraduate student enrollment has grown by more than 20% in the last four years and the College is making a number of investments in the campus facility to accommodate this growth. Recent renovations include classrooms, the dining hall, the residence hall, fitness center and bookstore.

Dr. David Fike, President, Marygrove College, said, “As the college continues to expand, it makes sense to align formal property ownership with the source of these capital investments. We look forward to the continuation of a strong and collaborative relationship between the IHM Sisters and Marygrove College.”

The Sisters, as sponsors, will continue to occupy one-third of the seats on Marygrove’s Board of Trustees and determine the philosophy and mission of the college. They will also retain a Mission Integration Office on campus. The College will appoint a Mission Effectiveness Officer, who will report directly to Marygrove’s president, ensuring the incorporation of the congregation’s founding values in the institution’s programs.

Several sisters also will continue to live in a residence on the college campus. Although the agreement is recent, the IHM Sisters have been considering this transfer of ownership for over 20 years.
