DETROIT, April 13, 2012 — Take Back the Night Detroit at Marygrove College has been formed to raise awareness, promote prevention, and support survivors of rape as they cast off shame, guilt and gain access to the help they need on their journey toward healing and wholeness. This year’s theme is “Healthy Sexuality for Sexual Assault Prevention.”

This event will be held on Friday April 13, 2012 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in the Madame Cadillac Building, Alumnae Hall, on the Marygrove College campus.

Marygrove College and more specifically, Student Government, the Women’s Center, and the Social Work Department are sponsoring this event with SASHA Center—a community-based organization formed to assist survivors of sexual assault.

The event will include poetry, music, dance, refreshments, guest speakers, a march and candlelight vigil acknowledging sexual assault survivors. Features of the event will include the “Wall of Hope” project, the “Healing Tent” and the “Clothesline” display. A student/woman of color at Marygrove College will receive the Ava Rogers scholarship for recognition of her work to end violence against women and children.

Community agencies that assist survivors of sexual assault have been invited and will also be present to provide information and referrals to participants. The Wayne County SAFE Project, First Step, Turning Point, SASHA Center, Interim House, and the Victim Assistance Program have all been invited to attend.

Event Goals:

  • To send a loud and clear message that sexual assault survivors on campus and within the community no longer have to suffer in silence and isolation.
  • To publicly proclaim that sexual assault and abuse in our community is unacceptable, inexcusable and will not be tolerated.
  • To raise our community’s consciousness about the effects of sexual violence and its impact on Metro Detroit, as well as provide support to survivors and inspire all to hope and to heal.
