DETROIT, March 25, 2010 — This year Marygrove’s Department of English and Modern Languages inaugurated a new writing competition held in conjunction with its Contemporary American Authors Lecture Series (CAALS): the Mary Helen Washington Writing Award Contest, open to high school students who participate in the CAALS Master Class at Marygrove. Named after nationally-renowned scholar, editor, essayist, and teacher Dr. Mary Helen Washington, and supported through the generosity of series sponsors Lillian and Don Bauder, this annual contest asks students to write essays in response to the works of the CAALS guest artist. The top four winners receive cash prizes.

For this inaugural year, students wrote their essays on the works of award-winning poet and literary scholar Harryette Mullen.

The College is pleased to announce the inaugural winners, listed below with their essay titles, schools, and teachers:

Grand Prize: Olivia Walls, "Elliptical Reminiscence," Cass Technical High School, Teacher: Vicki Green.

Second Prize: Celeste Goedert, "Sexism: A Fairytale Recipe," Ferndale High School, Teacher: Rachel Morrison.

Second Prize: Marwa Harp, "Let's Mambo and Be Frisky," Fordson High School, Teacher: Kerry Howell.

Second Prize: Mallory Fuller, "Elliptical and Denigrations: Depictions of Disgrace," Ferndale High School, Teacher: Rachel Morrison.

The winners will receive their recognition at the Master Class held on the morning of April 15, 2011, with Ms. Mullen.

Although the entries for the contest were submitted and judged anonymously, the College is proud to announce that the teachers of the winning students are all current or former students in Marygrove's Department of English and Modern Languages.

The Bauder Contemporary American Authors Lecture, featuring a reading and book signing by Ms. Mullen, will take place at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 15, in Alumnae Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
