Amber StephensAmber Stephens, a senior at Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills, was recently awarded a Presidential Scholarship from Marygrove College.  Amber, the daughter of Anita and Albert Stephens of Southfield, hopes to be a pre-med major with a minor in Spanish. The award, which is offered to high school seniors each spring, is renewable for four years, and includes full tuition as well as all fees, books, and supplies.

To qualify for the Presidential Scholarship, candidates need a minimum 3.70 grade point average, along with three letters of recommendation, and an essay that answers the question, “How does your leadership experience align with the three Cs of Marygrove College: competence, commitment, and compassion?”

While at Marian, Amber served as the PR Historian of the All School Board and as a class representative for four years. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, and the varsity track team, all the while maintaining a 3.73 GPA.  “We are excited to have a student of Amber’s caliber at Marygrove College,” said VaNessa P. Thompson, undergraduate admissions counselor.

“Marygrove appeals to me because it is close to home and also because its mission and curriculum are based on strong Christian values,” Amber stated.  “I am already used to an intimate Catholic environment and taking theology courses.” She expects a smooth transition from high school to college due to the similarities in the environment between Marian and Marygrove.  Both schools are sponsored by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

“I look forward to attending college at Marygrove, where I will continue to receive an excellent education as a Mustang!”  Another similarity between the two schools:  both have the Mustangs as their athletic mascot.

Located in Bloomfield Hills, Marian is a Catholic college preparatory high school for young women sponsored by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  The mission of Marian High School is to ensure an excellent education within a Christian environment, which will enable young women to value human diversity and live responsible lives of leadership and action based on gospel values.
