DETROIT, March 19, 2012 — Marygrove College today announced the recipients of the College’s 2012 High Honors Awards. These awards pay tribute to exceptional academic achievement and leadership skills. 

The awards and winners are as follows: Tammy Barnosky, Sholanda Presbery, Steven Sledge and Willie Peterson, Jarell Williams, Julie Laforet

THE SISTER JOHN CLEMENT HUNGERMAN, IHM SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1983‚ this scholarship is awarded to a sophomore or junior who exemplifies Sister John Clement’s interests and ideals.

Winner: Tammy Barnosky

SHAY FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to a returning Marygrove student who has exhibited academic and leadership excellence and high ethical standards of conduct.

Winner: Sholanda Presbery

THE BRIGGS-FISHER FOUNDATION ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR URBAN LEADERSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated interest in effecting positive change in the Detroit community, with a stated commitment to remain in the Detroit area after graduation.

Winners: Steven Sledge and Willie Peterson

ST. CATHERINE MEDAL/MARYGROVE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP
This award and scholarship is given to a sophomore or junior who has performed outstanding service to the College or has established the best record for progressive achievement.

Winner: Jarell Williams

DISTINGUISHED STUDENT
This award is given to an outstanding graduating senior for his/her academic excellence‚ leadership ability‚ and service to the community.

Winner:  Julie Laforet

“Marygrove is fortunate to have many gifted and dedicated students who truly embody our vision of tomorrow’s urban leaders,” said Marygrove President Dr. David Fike. “These students possess the key leadership qualities that Marygrove believes are necessary to bring about positive change to the communities in which we live and work. The students we honor today understand what it means to assess the social, political, and physical context of taking action in one’s community. They realize the ethical implications of activism, and   know first-hand what it takes to work with others to achieve common goals. These students are role models to us all and a tremendous source of pride.”

The winners will be celebrated along with other honors recipients at the College’s Honors Convocation, which will take place on Sunday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m. in Sacred Heart Chapel.
