STUDENT GOVERNANCE
COUNCIL OF STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
The Council of Student Organizations brings together representatives
of all organizations on campus to plan activities and share in decision-making
related to student activities and concerns.
STUDENT GOVERNMENT
The Marygrove Student Government is the official representative of the
college student body. The membership is elected each year at the beginning
of the fall semester. The goal of the Student Government is to enhance
the quality of student life at Marygrove. Student Government plans,
supports, and promotes student activities; surveys students and works
to resolve student concerns; and represents the student body on college-wide
committees.
STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
ART CLUB
The Marygrove Art Club provides students with both a social and educational
outlet for their artistic and creative interests. Activities include
visits to art galleries, out-of-town trips, career workshops, charitable
work, and occasional off-campus competitions. All students are welcome
to become members whether they are art majors, art minors, or merely
have an interest in art.
ASSOCIATION OF BLACK SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS
(ABSWS)
ABSWS is the student section of the Association of Black Social Workers,
a national professional organization. ABSWS fosters the growth and development
of black social work students who are committed to addressing issues
facing the black community.
COUNCIL FOR EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN (CEC)
CEC is a national organization of professional educators and parents
who work together to make things better for children with disability
challenges. In the Department of Education, a chapter of this organization
meets regularly to assess the needs of these special children and help
where possible.
HONOR SOCIETIES AND AWARDS
The Marygrove Chapter of Kappa Gamma Pi, the national Catholic college
honor society, is active on campus, as are the following national honor
societies: Pi Delta Phi (French), Phi Alpha (Social Work), Sigma Delta
Pi (Spanish), and Sigma Tau Delta (English).
An honor society unique to Marygrove, Iota Gamma Alpha, recognizes outstanding
students, who have a cumulative honor point average of 3.5 and higher,
for their leadership or service contributions to the College or civic
community.
Two of the major awards given at the Honors Convocation are the Distinguished
Student Award and the St. Catherine Medal. The Marygrove Distinguished
Student Award is given to an outstanding senior, chosen on the basis
of academic excellence, leadership ability, and service to the community.
The St. Catherine Medal is an award for the sophomore or junior who
has either rendered outstanding service to the College or established
the best record for progressive achievement.
Juniors or seniors with at least 24 credits at Marygrove and a cumulative
GPA of 3.5 or better are eligible for Whos Who Among Students
in American Universities and Colleges. Students are also awarded honors
for excellence in their majors.
MARYGROVE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION (MBA)
The MBA is a student organization of business majors and minors. It
provides a network between business students and faculty, and between
business graduates and members of the Detroit area business community.
It meets regularly to plan activities to promote professional development
and career awareness.
MARYGROVE MUSTANGS
In the fall of 2000, the College resurrected, after 20 years, its mens
club basketball program. The womens program was revived the following
year. A complete schedule of games, pep rallies and other team
spirit events are posted and available through Student Affairs
or the Office of the Head Coach.
The Marygrove Mustang dance team is a co-educational unit that provides
entertainment during basketball home games and spirit activities on
campus. Contact the Sports Program Office, Wellness Services or Student
Affairs for information on performances or tryout dates.
NETWORK
Network is a national organization of social work students. It serves
as a support system for those students as well as a link between them
and the general student body. Its purpose is to provide a positive image
as well as a greater understanding of the social work profession.
PSYCHOLOGY CLUB
The Psychology Club is open to all students in psychology or social
science. Its purpose is to support the growth and development of psychology
students at Marygrove. It provides a structure and forum for the exchange
of ideas, and develops programs and services in the interest of students.
The Club also links with other psychology organizations and associations.
SO BHEAS CLUB
The So Bheas Club (Gaelic for better living) is open to
all students majoring in family and consumer sciences. This club promotes
professional development, brings exciting personalities and events to
campus, and creates camaraderie between members of the department.
SOULFUL EXPRESSIONS ENSEMBLE
This organization was founded in the winter of 2001 and consists of
music majors who join together to learn from one another and perform
styles of gospel and jazz music on and off campus. The group appears
at campus functions and high profile community events. They also compete
at local and national levels. Talented non-music majors are eligible
to join the organization. Contact the Office of Student Affairs for
additional information.
STARTING A NEW ORGANIZATION
Individuals interested in starting new organizations on campus, should
contact the Director of Student Life to receive the necessary forms
for seeking approval.
RESIDENCE LIFE
Marygrove College provides opportunities for students to reside in a
co-educational residence hall on campus. Students share a suite and
have individual rooms. Residents are provided with telephone service,
Internet and cable access, a complete food service program, computers
and study space as well as opportunities to have fun and enjoy the community
atmosphere with peers. Applications are also available for year-round
occupancy. Please call the Office of Residence Life at (313) 927-1601
or stop by the office located on the first floor of Florent Gillet Hall.
MAINTAINING CAMPUS ORDER
CONDUCT
The trustees, administrators, faculty, staff and students constitute
the academic community of Marygrove College. As a member of the community,
each has a common loyalty, one to the other, and agrees to share the
responsibility for maintaining and preserving the educational objectives
of Marygrove College.
Any member of the community who violates campus rules or civil law will
be subject to disciplinary action. A listing of campus rules is available
in the Marygrove College Student Handbook, which includes an enumeration
of possible sanctions from written warning to dismissal from the College.
Should circumstances warrant it, a violator may be immediately removed
from the Colleges grounds and/or turned over to local authorities.
The procedure for due process of violators is in the handbook. The handbook
is available from the Office of Student Affairs.
LOCKERS
Student lockers, in the basement of the Liberal Arts Building, are available
for use through the Office of Student Affairs. Lockers are issued on
a first come, first served basis. Students are responsible for providing
their own locks and must relinquish the locker at the end of each semester.
PARKING
All students must have a parking permit for their vehicles. Students
can purchase parking stickers during registration in the Campus Safety
Office located in the Liberal Arts Building, Room 010. The cost is $15
per semester.
SMOKING
Effective July 1, 1995, all campus buildings are completely smoke-free.
Smoking outdoors is allowed in designated areas only.
STUDENT IDENTIFICATION CARDS
Students are required to have an ID card, which identifies them as official
Marygrove College students, and/or Florent Gillet residents.
The card is necessary for borrowing books and materials from the Marygrove
library or other libraries in the consortium. It also can be used for
making copies on campus.
To activate the copying function, students must pay a fee in Publications,
which is located in the Liberal Arts Building, Room 032. The amount
that students pay will be assigned to their card. Additional credit
can be placed on the card at any time. All copy machines in the library
and College hallways are available for students to use.
Students often find ID cards useful for discounts at movie theaters,
museums, and sporting events. If the card is lost or stolen, there is
a $3 replacement fee that must be paid in the Business office. Bring
the receipt to retake the photo.
To obtain an ID card, call Campus Safety at (313) 927-1411, or stop
by their office in the Liberal Arts Building, Room 010.
