Hello again to the Class of 1961 -
If you did not hear from me in March, you are not alone. It’s because I didn’t send anything. It’s not you, it’s me. But things are moving along nicely and I have lots of news to share. This message is intended to be an update so if you missed earlier messages (Nov., Jan., and Feb.), they will be found on our class web pages on Marygrove’s website. Check it out. http://www.marygrove.edu/alumni-donors/homecoming/class-of-1961.html All lists and newsletters are on our class web pages with the lists being updated every time I send out a newsletter.
By the time that you receive this, I will have updated the contents of all web links. I will also attach a .pdf file to each email for those who prefer to print and read off line. I have not heard that anyone has trouble reading a .pdf file but if you do, please send me a quick email and I will send the Word documents to you.
DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD:
The Distinguished Alumni Award was established in 2002 to recognize and honor alumni of distinction. A given individual can only receive this award once so, other than Sharon Holland, there are many from our class who are still eligible. From conversations I have already had, a number of you deserve this honor. Many of you have made excellent contributions to our times and if I were on the committee, you would have my vote. According to Diane Puhl, Alumni Relations Director, no one from our class has been nominated to date. So get out those pens and beat the May 31 deadline for submissions. You can do it. We have class members with the qualifications to be so recognized. Alumni, family, friends, co-workers, faculty, staff and students may submit nominations. Self-nominations are also accepted. The Alumni Association Advisory Council will review nominations and select the award recipients.
According to the Marygrove web site, “The Distinguished Alumni Awards celebrate the ideals of competence (the ability to understand and participate effectively in the promise of our evolving world), compassion (the capacity to care about and respect the worth and dignity of people), and commitment (the will to act responsibly based on one’s beliefs and to contribute to the building of a more just and humane world), qualities that Marygrove has always tried to instill in its graduates.”
This may be a new concept for some. It is customary for the 50-year class to make a significant gift to the college and we are looking for ideas, suggestions, feedback, from you. Gifts from other classes include donations to: Center for Social Justice and Community Engagement, Urban Leader Scholarship, Nancy A. Geschke Writing Center, Institute for Detroit Studies, and a new idea: Women’s Center of Marygrove College. CLASS OF ’61 CREATES:
A block of rooms is being held at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn, 600 Town Center Drive, Dearborn, MI. You may reserve a single or double occupancy room for Friday and/or Saturday night for $85 per night. At this fantastic rate, don’t let the other classes fill the room you want to reserve. We have a jump on other classes to reserve early. Reservations must be received on or before Friday, August 26, 2011 and may be made by calling 888-421-1442. You must identify yourself as a member of Marygrove College Homecoming 2011. Ruth Ann Stauder LeBay and Kathy Walker agreed to take on the responsibility of finding that special place where we can gather on Saturday evening for a relaxing dinner. We have not settled on a final location yet but there is a fine selection of nice restaurants in the Dearborn area, within a mile or so of the Hyatt Regency Dearborn. We are still weighing our options and hope to finalize the menu, price, and times shortly. We will let you know the details soon. We hope to be able to provide a nice dinner in the $30-35 range with a cash bar available. We will probably require payment or a deposit from you in order to secure a contract. Stay tuned.
I must admit that I had little time to work on this recently but we still have lots of leads to finally track down those listed below. Two on the mystery list from last time have been removed. The current list includes:
