Happy Spring to the Class of 1961 -

I really appreciate all the gratitude so many have expressed for coordinating all the information for our reunion. But it is not just me. So many have stepped up and taken on one of the responsibilities. I pass your thanks along to my many helpers, especially all those who have helped contact people who have not responded yet.

AS TIME GOES BY:

Okay, submissions to our memory book are finally starting to trickle in (but not fast enough) and we thank you very much for your discipline to do this. How do you recap 50 years? Well, it isn’t easy, we know that. But you can do it. Remember the hints provided previously (use any or all that you like):

  • Since 1961 . . . (Tell us what you have been doing – not everything though!)
  • The most rewarding aspect of my life since graduation has been . . .
  • Looking back over the last 50 years, the most significant part of my Marygrove education was . . .
  • My favorite “Marygrove Minute” occurred when . . . (so far, these have been really funny. Not all of us lived in the dorms, so I am getting quite an education 50 years later. I never knew that rain gutters were for refrigeration of beer bottles! How very clever we were. Tell me more, please.)

We have expanded the number of words allowed to 350. So please, please, please, send those submissions to me NOW at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The book is a lot of work and we must get started.   And don’t forget that picture.  DEADLINE: June 30.

We do have a backup plan in place if you just cannot get your submission to me electronically but most so far seem to be handling the request just fine. You can contact me at (717) 533-9636, or 866 Sand Hill Road, Hershey PA 17033. I will give you the details about what to do.

BREAKING NEWS – OUR DINNER:

Our dinner plans are complete! Big Fish Seafood Bistro, 700 Town Center Drive (at the corner of Valley View Drive) in Dearborn received the enthusiastic vote of our two phantom diners, Ruth Stauder LeBay and Kathy Walker. The restaurant is located less than a half-mile down the road from the Hyatt Regency and can also be found at: http://www.landrysrestaurants.com/. Click on the link to “Our Restaurants” on the left, and then click on the “Big Fish” logo in the upper right corner.  So our dinner date is Saturday, September 17; the time is 6 PM.

We will be allowed to choose from a selection of five (including one vegetarian), yummy entrees. The total price is $35 and includes the three course dinner, tax, and gratuity, served in our own private space with a cash bar conveniently located close by. The restaurant will also print a special “Marygrove Reunion” menu so everyone can make their choice that evening. Guests are definitely welcome. We ask you to reserve your place at our reunion table by sending a check payable to Ruth for $35 at:

Ruth LeBay, 2338 Chesapeake Ct., Troy MI 48098

Questions for Ruth:  Call: (248) 641-7667, or email her:  Ruth LeBay <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>

Having the money ahead of time will allow us to make the deposit to reserve the room and special facilities to make our class dinner very special. After August 15th, the deposit is non-refundable.  That is the last date the restaurant allows us to cancel our reservation. We should receive a sample menu shortly. It will be in the next newsletter. If we get it before that we will post it on the web page. You will not be disappointed. Bon Appétit!

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD:

There is still time to nominate, but do it soon.  DEADLINE:  May 31. The application form can be found at: http://www.marygrove.edu/alumni-donors/alumni-relations/distinguished-alumni.html Alumni, family, friends, co-workers, faculty, staff, and students may all submit nominations. Self-nominations are also accepted. The Alumni Association Advisory Council will review nominations and select the award recipients.

CLASS GIFT:

It is customary for the 50-year class to make a significant gift to the college and we are looking for ideas, suggestions, feedback, from you.  Lois Carroll Dunn has agreed to serve as the coordinator of the gift suggestions. So please send your preference on how our gift should be spent to Lois at: Lois Dunn This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., or 117 Woodcrest Dr., Roscommon, MI 48653, or call her at (989) 821-5038. Lois will collect ideas and until July 31. The General “Golden” Committee for our reunion will then vote on the selections submitted. If you receive my information by regular mail, a list of possible choices was included in my last letter. That list for the email people is found on our web page. Please feel free to suggest other options. The gift itself should be sent to the Alumni Relations director, Diane Puhl at Marygrove College with an indication that it is for the class of 1961 gift. This is our chance to say “Thanks” to Marygrove. And Diane tells me that she has already started to receive contributions to our class gift.

ACCOMMODATIONS:

A block of rooms is being held at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn, 600 Town Center Drive, Dearborn, MI.  You may reserve a single or double occupancy room for Friday and/or Saturday night for $85 per night.  At this fantastic rate, don’t let the other classes fill the room you want to reserve.
