Bridging the Gap between Pre-service and In-Service Teacher Knowledge of Young Adult Literature and Urban Adolescents Literature Choices.  Presenting research with urban students and teachers about literature choices.

November 20, 2005 National Council of Teachers of English, Pittsburgh, PA. Notable Children’s Books in the Language Arts Committee will introduce the 2005 Notable Books List. Following a slide presentation of each of the 30 books, participants will be invited to engage in roundtable conversations with committee members and Notable Books authors and illustrators

Workshop: Using Popular Culture: HIP HOP WITH HIGHLAND PARK, Highland Park, MI August 25, 2005. Focused on historical perspective of Hip Hop, transition from hip-hop to gangsta, influence on youth culture and lessons plans to incorporate hip hop across the curriculum.

Presentation: Co-presenter – Between the Covers-National Black Child Development Institute Conference. Los Angeles, CA. October 2004. Presented current African American children’s literature, and research conducted with urban high school students and their book choices.

Workshop: Reading Across the Curriculum: Developing Standards Based Reading Activities. Highland Park School District. May 04. This workshop was designed for K-12 instructors to develop standards based thematic units incorporating all subject areas. Participants created units related to their content area and connected it across the curriculum.

Presentation: Co-presenter-Attack the problem…Not the Kid! Helping All Children Read Better. Educational Summit and Student Conference. Pontiac Interfaith Council. March 04. Co-presented multi-cultural children’s literature, and presented reading strategies and techniques to parents and educators.

Workshop: Reading Across the Content Area: Connecting special subjects. Highland Park School District, January 2004. Demonstrated science based reading strategies to integrate art, music, computer skills and physical education.

Presentation: Using Young Adult Literature in the Classroom. McDougall-Little Publications-DPS Professional Development Program Summer Academy, June 2003. Shared research based on my work with young adult literature, and shared appropriate book titles.

Presentation: “What is it about me you can’t teach? Issues in urban teaching. BEST Grant-DPS, Detroit, MI, May 3, 2003. Focused on perceptions of urban schools and teachers. Examined successful urban school teaching, and teacher efficacy.

Presentation: Between the Covers: National Black Child Development Institute October 17, 2003, New Orleans, LA.  Shared research results from a project initiated in the previous conference, presented a tribute to deceased author/illustrator Tom Feelings, and shared the new literature genre.

Workshop: Youth Leadership and Professional Development: Storytelling Experience.  A Symposium on the Urban Family, Bridges, November 21, 2002, Marygrove College. Engaged children ages five to sixteen in a storytelling activity, and demonstrated skills for group leaders present.

Presentation: Between the Covers: Literature for our children, 32nd Annual Conference, October 27, 2002, Atlanta, GA. Shared current children’s literature books, and presented young adult literature with sensitive issues such as physical and sexual abuse, violence, suicide, self esteem, teen pregnancy, and prejudice.

Presentation: Special Issues of African American Parents. 23rd Annual Professional Development Conference. The Children’s Center of Wayne County, May 20, 2002. Focused on issues unique to African American parents in urban areas. Shared strategies and techniques to support successful parenting, and included a list of issue related children’s books that therapist, caregivers and parents could use with children.
