In my head, I participate in an unresolved debate between a fascination with objects and packaging and a disdain of materialism and consumerism. I recognize an inherent beauty in packaging and product presentation. There is perfection in the manufactured object, accessibility, and a wide variety of choice at an affordable price. Manufactured objects are the eventual residue of our culture. These objects hold the dreams, aspirations and the plans of the past. Each object carries the history of its creation --- the intuition and imagination that created the idea, the engineering and the work of bringing the idea to fruition. Yet I also know that 65% of daily garbage can be attributed to packaging. Manufacturing in developing countries exploits workers. Consumerism abounds. Today it is our patriotic duty to be consumers, our duty as citizens to assist the economy.
The creative process directly engages chaos. The process of making art is one way to the individual and the collective unconscious. Using the approach of sustained reflection, the basic motivation has always been the same --- to see in a fresh way, outside the normal patterns, to discover or invent new form. Each generation is presented its own array of opportunities, challenges and problems calling for creative involvement. My current work plays off one paradox of contemporary life ---- an overwhelming sense of vulnerability on both a personal and collective level. Through this work I hope to continue reflecting on the contradictions inherent in our society.
I believe that sustained reflection in the process of making art will bring some understanding and insight into the choices we can make in attitude, in philosophy and in patterns of social action.
