The Marygrove Advantage

The Marygrove Advantage
Marygrove offers several merit-based awards to help supplement the cost of tuition for deserving students. These awards help attract and sustain those who have excelled academically at the high school or college level. These individuals have the opportunity to benefit from all of the unique educational opportunities that Marygrove offers. For many students, an award can make the difference of receiving any higher education, let alone one that has the quality that our liberal arts emphasis provides. Award recipients bring high academic standards to the College as well as great enthusiasm and diversity. From the heart of Detroit, across the country and even overseas, these students bring a unique history and knowledge that enriches the College for all our students. Your support of the Marygrove Advantage Campaign will help fund more awards for more students, helping the best and brightest receive the Marygrove Advantage.

Amy Pavlov, class of 2008, major: undecided
Being the daughter of a Marygrove graduate, Amy always knew about Marygrove, but until she visited the campus, she didn’t know Marygrove. Struck by the campus’s beauty and impressed by the friendly atmosphere, she knew Marygrove was for her. Even so, Amy is the youngest of five children, and scholarship offers played a crucial role in choosing a college. Because of Amy’s high academic performance in high school, she was offered a full tuition Distinguished Scholar Award from Marygrove.

Since enrolling at Marygrove, Amy has continued to excel academically and received a writing award during this year’s Contemporary Authors Series. She values the personal interaction between students and faculty at Marygrove College. Amy says, “Your professors become a part of your life.” Her participation in two study abroad programs helped her to get to know her classmates and professors further, producing even more opportunities for learning.

Ernest Mavunga, class of 2007, major: chemistry
Ernest was born and raised in Zimbabwe and came to the USA in 2002. After spending a year at a community college, Ernest was ready to transfer to a four-year college. He applied to schools all over the country, but because of his status as an international student, was only offered half-tuition scholarships. Ernest could not afford the remaining costs. His search continued. When he met a Marygrove admissions counselor at a recruitment event, his search ended. As a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, Ernest was eligible for a full tuition award from Marygrove.

Ernest reflects, “Now that I look back, I see the Marygrove community is just right for me. If I had gone to any other school, the experience would not have been as fulfilling. The faculty
here, prepare the students for the world out there.” Ernest is looking forward to a career as a physician and more immediately, a summer research internship at John Hopkins University.
He credits the constant support of faculty members for this tremendous opportunity.
