SUMMER TRAVELS WITH ALUMNI AND STUDENTS
Students Travel to London As part of their on-campus preparation, students studied London literary luminaries from Sam Johnson, Dickens and Sherlock Holmes and the latest PD James and Ian McEwan novels. The group then spent one week in London and enjoyed theatre performances, from Shakespeare to The Lion King, tours of the literary Bloomsbury area, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Charles Dickens' Museum and the Temple Bar (law courts where his young heroes often studied), the contemporary London of Brick Lane and the new Tate Modern, the Tower of London and a day of just plain sight-seeing. Some students had a chance to visit Paris, Dublin and Edinborough as well.
For information on the Study Abroad program, you can contact Jennifer Gansler, Director of Study Abroad/Spanish Instructor, at (313) 927-1485 or studyabroad@marygrove.edu.
MARYGROVE OFFERS A CRIMINAL JUSTICE MAJOR Criminal Justice majors will learn to appreciate the racial, ethnic, gender, social-cultural, historical and political forces that shape our lives. Classes range from “Women in the Justice System” to “Juvenile Delinquency.” As a unique feature, the Criminal Justice major will offer cutting-edge courses in restorative justice, a victim-centered response to crime that provides opportunities for those most directly affected by crime—the victim, the offender, their families and representatives of the community—to be directly involved in responding to the harm caused by the crime. Criminal Justice students will also have the opportunity to complete an internship and work on community projects. For more information on the Criminal Justice major, please contact Dr. Catherine Orban at (313) 927-1288 or corban@marygrove.edu.
Previous to contest, the couple had already ruled out the Rattlesnake Club (too expensive) and narrowed the list to Marygrove or the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Annette Scott, General Manager, Marygrove College Banquet and Conference Center, is delighted that they chose the college. “This is a great opportunity for us to showcase the magnificent work we do here. I love a challenge and our team here enjoys coming up with creative ways to make an event special and unique for our clients. We like to present a ‘wow’ factor with our events.” The fact that Marygrove is a gorgeous setting didn’t hurt either. As quoted in the Free Press, the couple wants “to show guests there are places in Detroit that are beautiful.” The wedding date is September 2 so that more out-of-town guests could come on the Labor Day weekend. Toya, a quality control engineer, told the Free Press that she would like “her wedding to be more than a wedding. She wants it to be an experience. ‘I just want this to be the best wedding ever.’” Details on the wedding are available on the couple's wedding web site: www.donaldandtoya.com.
ACCREDITATION PROJECT MOVING AHEAD QUICKLY The College’s review is scheduled for March 25-28, 2007. Receiving full accreditation is enormously important to the institution for two reasons. First, accreditation is the mark of a quality educational institution. And second, every institution in the United States must be accredited for students to receive federal financial aid such as Pell Grants and Work Study funding. Check the website, http://www.marygrove.edu/nca, for up-to-the-minute information about the project.
SUMMER TIME AND THE LIVING IS BUSY AT MARYGROVE Our Continuing Education Department conducts the summer programs including Chess, Sports, Sewing, Modeling, Acting and Etiquette, Adventures in Art and Money Matters, along with academic classes in math, reading, writing and test-taking skills. Music, dance and theatre classes are provided by the Institute of Music and Dance. Classes are designed to engage and excite children with unique and innovative programming that builds not only academic and artistic skills, but self esteem, teamwork and self awareness. The overall philosophy is that students learn best when they feel safe, comfortable and cared for. To make the programs accessible to all children, CE provides special consideration for those who need monetary support. You can help support the Institute of Music and Dance summer programs by donating to the “Summer Dreams” program, facilitated by the Detroit Free Press Charities Foundation. See the related article in this edition of “Marygrove Minute.”
MAKE “SUMMER DREAMS” COME TRUE AND SUPPORT MARYGROVE’S
CHILDREN’S THEATRE AND ART PROGRAMS Fortunately, the camps were again chosen to benefit from the Detroit Free Press, Children First - Summer Dreams initiative. As part of this program, the Skillman Foundation matches each donation, up $1,500, to help reach a combined goal of $32,000. A gift to Summer Dreams allows Marygrove to provide numerous scholarships for young, talented, and deserving metro Detroiters who otherwise would not be able to participate in these wonderful camps. Three of the camps provided are in the area of theatre and dance and a new program, “Adventures in Art,” will provide visual art instruction. Nearly 100 youths, ages 5-18, will take part in an interactive theatre and visual arts experience they’ll cherish forever in the three camps: Junior Performers’ Camp, Summer Theater Intensive and Totally Theater. These programs provides the youth with professional and fun instruction in such aspects of the performing arts disciplines as acting, voice, dance, improvisation, stage make-up, lighting, and stagecraft. At the conclusion of the programs, our junior performers will showcase what they’ve learned in a performance in the 400-seat Marygrove College Theatre. New this year is the Adventures in Art camp, a two-week, half-day hands-on experience for children ages 5-7 and 8-14. Children will draw, paint, build, and develop pieces of art that can stand alone or be integrated with movement or with their environment. Students will present and display their works in Marygrove College’s prestigious Art Gallery at the conclusion of the camp. Marygrove’s performing and visual arts camps not only offer a fun experience for students they won’t get anywhere else, but they also provide the opportunity for building self-esteem, teamwork, creativity, oral and physical presentation, and the opportunity to tap into their inner talents and, more importantly, discover a whole new world about themselves, others, and the passion of the arts. To make a donation, click here to print a form you can mail in, or contact Maureen Leonard at 313-927-1308 or at mleonard@marygrove.edu. Here is the Summer Dreams Donation Form.
