SUMMER TRAVELS WITH ALUMNI AND STUDENTS
Alumni Tour Ford Rouge Factory
Organized by the alumni program committee and led by Sheila A. Keefe ’56, an enthusiastic group of alums enjoyed a highly entertaining and interactive tour of the Ford Rouge Factory on June 23rd. The afternoon tour included a historic drive from the Henry Ford Greenfield Village to the factory, rare footage viewing, a virtual reality experience, an observation deck tour and an assembly plant walk where the F150’s were being assembled.

Some of the Rouge factory tour group attendees, left to right: Andrea Storrs ’02, Yvonne Larabell ’64, her grandchildren Rebecca Eggert and Timmy Renaud, Tom Larabell, Theresa Monsour ’61, Sheila Keefe ’56 and Ashanti Kenyatta-Webb ’99.

Students Travel to London
Marygrove’s Office of Study Abroad and the English and Modern Languages Department combined forces in the creation of the first graduate-level Study Abroad program. For the first tour, Professor Maureen DesRoches led London in Literature course students to England for 10 days in June.

As part of their on-campus preparation, students studied London literary luminaries from Sam Johnson, Dickens and Sherlock Holmes and the latest PD James and Ian McEwan novels.

The group then spent one week in London and enjoyed theatre performances, from Shakespeare to The Lion King, tours of the literary Bloomsbury area, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Charles Dickens' Museum and the Temple Bar (law courts where his young heroes often studied), the contemporary London of Brick Lane and the new Tate Modern, the Tower of London and a day of just plain sight-seeing. Some students had a chance to visit Paris, Dublin and Edinborough as well.

JP Song, Assistant English Professor, Daquetta Baylor ’06, Felicia Davis (English graduate student), Cedar Lowe (English graduate student) and Felicia Moore (English undergraduate student). Daquetta and Felicia Moore went to a Hare Krishna celebration in Trafalgar Square and came back dressed in their traditional garb.

Kerry (English undergraduate student) and Greg Howell, Judy Garver and Thom Caron visit the War Memorial Museum.

MARYGROVE OFFERS A CRIMINAL JUSTICE MAJOR
Marygrove College will offer a new criminal justice interdisciplinary major this fall.  The major will be housed in the Social Sciences Department and builds on the foundation of courses already offered in Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, Forensic Science and Social Work.

Criminal Justice majors will learn to appreciate the racial, ethnic, gender, social-cultural, historical and political forces that shape our lives. Classes range from “Women in the Justice System” to “Juvenile Delinquency.”

As a unique feature, the Criminal Justice major will offer cutting-edge courses in restorative justice, a victim-centered response to crime that provides opportunities for those most directly affected by crime—the victim, the offender, their families and representatives of the community—to be directly involved in responding to the harm caused by the crime.

Criminal Justice students will also have the opportunity to complete an internship and work on community projects.

For more information on the Criminal Justice major, please contact Dr. Catherine Orban at (313) 927-1288 or corban@marygrove.edu

COUPLE PLAN THEIR DREAM WEDDING AT MARYGROVE
From March 12 to March 17, Detroit Free Press readers got to decide which metro Detroit engaged couple the newspaper would follow to the altar. Out of 36,652 votes, Donald Cade and Toya Holmes were selected with 61.7% of the vote (22,614 votes). And they have chosen Marygrove for their reception. Since then, the Free Press has been documenting the progress of the wedding plans.

Previous to contest, the couple had already ruled out the Rattlesnake Club (too expensive) and narrowed the list to Marygrove or the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Annette Scott, General Manager, Marygrove College Banquet and Conference Center, is delighted that they chose the college. “This is a great opportunity for us to showcase the magnificent work we do here. I love a challenge and our team here enjoys coming up with creative ways to make an event special and unique for our clients. We like to present a ‘wow’ factor with our events.”

The fact that Marygrove is a gorgeous setting didn’t hurt either. As quoted in the Free Press, the couple wants “to show guests there are places in Detroit that are beautiful.”

The wedding date is September 2 so that more out-of-town guests could come on the Labor Day weekend. Toya, a quality control engineer, told the Free Press that she would like “her wedding to be more than a wedding. She wants it to be an experience. ‘I just want this to be the best wedding ever.’”

Details on the wedding are available on the couple's wedding web site: www.donaldandtoya.com.

ACCREDITATION PROJECT MOVING AHEAD QUICKLY
This summer, the Marygrove College accreditation project is moving into high gear as the self-study report begins to take shape. Marygrove is in the midst of a two-year-long self-study in preparation for the upcoming evaluation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). This is the association recognized by the United States Secretary of Education and the Committee on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation to establish standards for institutions of higher education and to ensure continuous improvement. To maintain accreditation, every ten years Marygrove College is required to conduct a wide-ranging self-study following NCA’s criteria.

The College’s review is scheduled for March 25-28, 2007. Receiving full accreditation is enormously important to the institution for two reasons. First, accreditation is the mark of a quality educational institution. And second, every institution in the United States must be accredited for students to receive federal financial aid such as Pell Grants and Work Study funding. Check the website, http://www.marygrove.edu/nca, for up-to-the-minute information about the project.

SUMMER TIME AND THE LIVING IS BUSY AT MARYGROVE
Peels of laughter ring through the hallways as excited young students go to and from their classes at Marygrove. But these are not your typical college-aged students. Over 650 youth, from pre-school to high school age, participate in various on-campus summer programs. In addition, there are 230 students attending a summer reading tutorial program at three Detroit elementary schools facilitated by Marygrove College.

Our Continuing Education Department conducts the summer programs including Chess, Sports, Sewing, Modeling, Acting and Etiquette, Adventures in Art and Money Matters, along with academic classes in math, reading, writing and test-taking skills. Music, dance and theatre classes are provided by the Institute of Music and Dance.
The unique “YES for PREP” program prepares high-achieving, low-income, minority youth in the City of Detroit for admission to independent, competitive college preparatory schools.

Classes are designed to engage and excite children with unique and innovative programming that builds not only academic and artistic skills, but self esteem, teamwork and self awareness. The overall philosophy is that students learn best when they feel safe, comfortable and cared for.  To make the programs accessible to all children, CE provides special consideration for those who need monetary support.

You can help support the Institute of Music and Dance summer programs by donating to the “Summer Dreams” program, facilitated by the Detroit Free Press Charities Foundation.  See the related article in this edition of “Marygrove Minute.”

MAKE “SUMMER DREAMS” COME TRUE AND SUPPORT MARYGROVE’S CHILDREN’S THEATRE AND ART PROGRAMS
Marygrove College seeks support for the various children’s art and theatre programs offered this summer by the Institute of Music and Dance. This year, the College needs to raise $16,000 in order to fund these summer camps.

Fortunately, the camps were again chosen to benefit from the Detroit Free Press, Children First - Summer Dreams initiative. As part of this program, the Skillman Foundation matches each donation, up $1,500, to help reach a combined goal of $32,000.

A gift to Summer Dreams allows Marygrove to provide numerous scholarships for young, talented, and deserving metro Detroiters who otherwise would not be able to participate in these wonderful camps.

Three of the camps provided are in the area of theatre and dance and a new program, “Adventures in Art,” will provide visual art instruction.

Nearly 100 youths, ages 5-18, will take part in an interactive theatre and visual arts experience they’ll cherish forever in the three camps: Junior Performers’ Camp, Summer Theater Intensive and Totally Theater. These programs provides the youth with professional and fun instruction in such aspects of the performing arts disciplines as acting, voice, dance, improvisation, stage make-up, lighting, and stagecraft. At the conclusion of the programs, our junior performers will showcase what they’ve learned in a performance in the 400-seat Marygrove College Theatre.

New this year is the Adventures in Art camp, a two-week, half-day hands-on experience for children ages 5-7 and 8-14. Children will draw, paint, build, and develop pieces of art that can stand alone or be integrated with movement or with their environment. Students will present and display their works in Marygrove College’s prestigious Art Gallery at the conclusion of the camp.

Marygrove’s performing and visual arts camps not only offer a fun experience for students they won’t get anywhere else, but they also provide the opportunity for building self-esteem, teamwork, creativity, oral and physical presentation, and the opportunity to tap into their inner talents and, more importantly, discover a whole new world about themselves, others, and the passion of the arts.

To make a donation, click here to print a form you can mail in, or contact Maureen Leonard at 313-927-1308 or at mleonard@marygrove.edu.
