MARYGROVE COLLEGE WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT JULY 1
David J. Fike, PhD, assumes the presidency of Marygrove College on Saturday, July 1, 2006, becoming the eighth president in the College ’s 100-year history.

He succeeds Glenda D. Price, PhD, who retired after eight years as president.

Dr. Fike joined Marygrove College as Provost on August 1, 2005, serving as Marygrove’s chief operating officer with responsibility for all academic programs as well as all activities related to the education of students, including Student Affairs. He headed the 2006-2009 Strategic Plan, which has endorsed the strategic vision of Urban Leadership for Marygrove. His selection by the Marygrove Board of Trustees was announced in March 2006 after a national search.

Dr. Fike came to Marygrove from Holy Names University in Oakland, California, where he has been Chief Academic Officer and Dean of Faculty since 1997. He joined Holy Names in 1992 as associate professor of economics.

As Chief Academic Officer, he had oversight of the $6.5 million annual Academic Affairs Division budget, all academic programs, campus information technology, library services, student registration processes, learning support resources and advising services.

He is an economics professor at the graduate and undergraduate level and a frequent guest lecturer and presenter on such topics as socially responsible investing, economic revitalization and community development.

Dr. Fike received his B.A. in political science with high honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his doctorate in economics from the University of Maryland, College Park. In 1999, he coauthored the book “Everything You Need to Know about Economics” with Gregg Stebben, published by Simon & Schuster.

DR. GLENDA PRICE SAYS FARWELL IN GRAND FASHION OVER $200,00 RAISED FOR SCIENCE INITIATIVE
Over 270 guests were on hand to bid adieu to Dr. Glenda Price at a gala reception on June 8th at Marygrove College. The evening was not only a celebration on the occasion of her retirement but also a fundraiser for the Dr. Glenda D. Price Science Initiative Fund.

The evening rains held off while guests were entertained by the jazzy tunes of Spencer Barefield on the campus grounds for the first portion of the festivities.  Later, the party proceeded to Alumni Hall to enjoy a strolling dinner and have a chance to say their goodbyes and well wishes to Dr. Price.

After dinner, the guests were ushered to the theater for performances by the Marygrove College Dance Company and the Marygrove College Chorale. Throughout the program, thoughtful words of tribute were given by Sr. Virginia Pfau, President of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary; Michigan Lieutenant Governor John Cherry; Bennett College President Johnnetta Cole; Frank Fountain, Senior Vice President of DaimlerChrysler; Nettie Harris Seabrooks (Marygrove alum), Chief Operating Officer of The Detroit Institute of Arts; Dr. Frank Rashid, Marygrove Professor of English and Chair of the English and Modern Languages Department; and Julia Darlow, Attorney, Varnum Riddering, and Secretary of Marygrove College Board of Trustees.

Dr. Price will not be leaving the Detroit area any time soon and plans to carry on her active role in the community. She has made a commitment to Detroit and will continue her role as board member of many corporate and non-profit organizations. She also hopes to enjoy world-wide travel, one of her passions.

In tribute to the many contributions Dr. Price has made, not only to Marygrove but to the greater Detroit community, the College Board of Trustees created The Dr. Glenda D. Price Science Initiative Fund to serve as a catalyst for contributions to Marygrove’s broader science initiative, which was the brainchild of Dr. Price.

To donate to the Science Initiative Fund, please contact Janet Kuras at 313-927-1436 or jkuras@marygrove.edu.

SUMMER SCIENCE TEACHER WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE AT MARYGROVE
Are you tired of trying to find new ways to engage your students in learning science? Looking for something different to teach in your classroom? Why not attend summer programs at the Institute for Science and Mathematics Education at Marygrove College?

The College is offering three summer programs for teachers August 7-11 on the Marygrove campus.  Biotechnology and Forensic Science are for those teaching grades 5 through 12, and Everyday Chemistry is for educators of 3rd through 10th grades.

These professional development programs provide learning theory and associated pedagogy to enable teachers to present science more effectively in the classroom using hands-on experiences, laboratory experiments and other learning activities that are both educational and fun.

The workshops provide content information and modeling of hands-on, inquiry-driven teaching pedagogy, which allows teachers to experience the lessons from a student’s point of view and gives them a strategy for conducting open-ended experiences in the classroom. Workshop participants receive a binder with experiments and resources that can be used in the classroom, a CD copy of material used during the week and one complete experiment with enough materials to be used for one class of students.

Some competitive scholarships are available. Applications are due by July 15. Call Sally Welch, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Environmental Science, at 313-927-1319 for more information. Or see the ISME brochure which can be filled out and faxed to Professor Welch at 313-927-1345.

MAKE “SUMMER DREAMS” COME TRUE AND SUPPORT MARYGROVE’S CHILDREN’S THEATRE AND ART PROGRAMS
Marygrove College seeks support for the various children’s art and theatre programs offered this summer by the Institute of Music and Dance. This year, the College needs to raise $16,000 in order to fund these summer camps.

Fortunately, the camps were again chosen to benefit from the Detroit Free Press, Children First - Summer Dreams initiative. As part of this program, the Skillman Foundation matches each donation, up $1,500, to help reach a combined goal of $32,000.

A gift to Summer Dreams allows Marygrove to provide numerous scholarships for young, talented, and deserving metro Detroiters who otherwise would not be able to participate in these wonderful camps.

Three of the camps provided are in the area of theatre and dance and a new program, “Adventures in Art,” will provide visual art instruction.

Nearly 100 youths, ages 5-18, will take part in an interactive theatre and visual arts experience they’ll cherish forever in the three camps: Junior Performers’ Camp, Summer Theater Intensive and Totally Theater. These programs provides the youth with professional and fun instruction in such aspects of the performing arts disciplines as acting, voice, dance, improvisation, stage make-up, lighting, and stagecraft. At the conclusion of the programs, our junior performers will showcase what they’ve learned in a performance in the 400-seat Marygrove College Theatre.

New this year is the Adventures in Art camp, a two-week, half-day hands-on experience for children ages 5-7 and 8-14. Children will draw, paint, build, and develop pieces of art that can stand alone or be integrated with movement or with their environment. Students will present and display their works in Marygrove College’s prestigious Art Gallery at the conclusion of the camp.

Marygrove’s performing and visual arts camps not only offer a fun experience for students they won’t get anywhere else, but they also provide the opportunity for building self-esteem, teamwork, creativity, oral and physical presentation, and the opportunity to tap into their inner talents and, more importantly, discover a whole new world about themselves, others, and the passion of the arts.
