MARYGROVE'S CELEBRATING AND YOU'RE INVITED: MAY 9 AND JUNE 8

Two celebrations will be held in honor of Dr. Price’s retirement: one on May 9 and another on June 8.

The Marygrove community – students, faculty, staff, IHM sisters, alumni -- will celebrate her tenure with a retirement party on Tuesday, May 9, from 3:00 till 6:00 p.m. on the lawn in front of Madame Cadillac. Since this event is free of charge, all you need to bring are your good wishes for her long and healthy retirement. All alumni, IHM’s, and Marygrove faculty and staff members are invited to this celebration. Be on hand for the dedication of the Dr. Glenda D. Price Garden, her farewell gift to the College.

On Thursday, June 8, at 6:00 p.m., a fundraising dinner will be held in Dr. Price’s honor on campus as well. All the proceeds from this event will go to science programming at Marygrove. The fundraising effort underway is called the Dr. Glenda D. Price Science Initiative Fund.

MARYGROVE CONTRIBUTORS ATTEND "DONOR COLLEGE"

Marygrove College’s President's Council members (those who contribute $1,000 or more) were invited “back to school” to experience first-hand the quality education they support. Real Marygrove students became the teachers as the group went from floor to floor of the Liberal Arts Building experiencing the rigors of course work while enjoying a progressive dinner along the way.

The “students” were greeted at the first floor entrance of the Liberal Arts Building where they received their “class schedule.” From there, they were taken to the Fourth Floor Gallery for an introduction to the work of multi-media artist Anita Thacher. Marygrove art students were on hand to update the group about the graphic design area of the art department as well.

The “class” then descended to the third floor for Science and Math 202. There they became acquainted with the newly installed interactive “Smart Classroom” and dove into a forensic class taking place that evening as well.

From there, they were led to the Institute of Music and Dance studios on the second floor. The students’ high powered performances illustrated the various forms of dance taught at Marygrove while Director Judith Molina explained the educational requirements of the Marygrove Institute of Dance and shared success stories of its graduates.

Library Science was their last class led by Linnea Dudley, after which they dined on the main course in the Fisher Room.

All “students” received an “A +” on their blue book at the end of their coursework and were rewarded with coffee and desert in the Beyond Words Gallery. There, visiting artist Kathe Arkle's work was on display as part of this semester’s series entitled “The Women of Winter 2006.”

The evening was an overwhelming success and it was best summed up by Gene Jacoby, one of the guests. “It was the first time I got to ‘see’ what was taking place at the college rather than sitting in a nice dining room across campus in Madame Cadillac only ‘hearing’ about the great education offered here.”

ALUMNI MEET IN ARIZONA

Two “In Residence” gatherings of alumna took place in Arizona in March. The first gathering was held on Thursday, March 9, at the Café Terra Cotta in Tucson. Patricia Hilbert Jacoby ’53 and Rita Terriere Kerr ’53 kindly hosted this event. The class of ’53 gets together at least once a year and Pat and Rita extended their invitation to others from the area. The following day, Anne Spagnuolo DeRose ’55 graciously hosted a gathering at Oakwood Country Club in Sun Lakes.

Both groups enjoyed reconnecting with friends and reminiscing about their days at Marygrove. Vice President of Institutional Advancement Jo Ann Cusmano ’76 and Institutional Advancement Coordinator Maureen Leonard updated the alums about the latest developments at Marygrove and encouraged them to continue their support of the College.

An “In Residence” event is an intimate gathering held in a volunteer host’s home, club or other location and are designed to increase the network of Marygrove supporters and to share the love of Marygrove with friends and colleagues in a comfortable setting. The host can determine the date, time and style of the event and the development staff will assist you with any aspect of the event from gathering names of alums in the area to coordination of the event. You can have as little or much assistance as you would like.

MONEY $MART WEEK 2006

Several financial and economic literacy workshops come to campus the week of April 22-29 for Money $mart Week 2006. Marygrove has partnered with other organizations involved in financial education to present on- and off-campus events so that they are free and open to the public. In its third year, Money $mart Week is sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Detroit Branch.

HELP BEAUTIFY MARYGROVE'S CAMPUS

Saturday, May 6, 2006, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Spend the morning working alongside Marygrove alumni, faculty, staff and students to spruce up the campus for Dr. Price’s retirement party on May 9 and graduation on May 13. We will clean out flower beds, plant LOTS of flowers, rake leaves and grass, and pick up trash. Anyone who had the opportunity to come to campus last summer knows firsthand what a difference these few hours of work make. The flowers last year were exceptional and the grounds looked better than ever.

COMMENCEMENT ON MAY 13. DINGELL TO DELIVER SPEECH

The Class of 2006 celebrates a new beginning at the commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 13, at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit. The Honorable John D. Dingell, U.S. House of Representatives, will deliver the commencement speech. Mr. Dingell is called Dean of the House for having served the longest in the 435-member body; December 13, 2005, marked his 50th anniversary in the U.S. House.

Dr. Grace Lee Boggs will receive the Theresa Maxis Award for Social Justice as a staunch activist for more than six decades. She was born of Chinese immigrants 90 years ago. She married James Boggs, an African American factory worker, activist and revolutionary in 1953. Together, they joined the ongoing campaign for peace and social justice.

Receiving an honorary degree will be Dr. Glenda D. Price, president of Marygrove, and Charles McGee, an active Detroit artist since 1947. He can truly be considered an “Urban Leader in the Arts” in Detroit and Michigan. Dr. Price will receive an honorary degree as she retires from Marygrove on June 30 after eight years of service to the College and to the Metropolitan Detroit community at large.


"TEE UP" FOR FUN AT THE 5TH ANNUAL ALUMNI AND FRIENDS GOLF SCRAMBLE

Grab your clubs and join us for the 5th Annual Alumni and Friends Golf Scramble on September 9, 2006. We are again returning to the beautiful yet challenging Copper Hills Golf and Country Club in Oxford. The Lord of the Rings – Toronto

NOMINATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARDS

Marygrove College and the Alumni Association are accepting nominations for the Distinguished Alumni Awards. These awards have been established to recognize and honor alumni who have distinguished themselves and their alma mater. Nominations are due by May 31, 2006.

All Marygrove College alumni (those who have earned undergraduate or graduate degrees) are eligible for this award. Self-nominations are encouraged. Alumni, family, friends, co-workers, faculty, staff and students may submit nominations. The Alumni Association Advisory Council will review nominations and select the award recipients.

The Distinguished Alumni Awards celebrate the ideals of competence (the ability to understand and participate effectively in the promise of our evolving world), commitment (the capacity to care about and respect the worth and dignity of people) and compassion (the will to act responsibly based upon one’s beliefs and to contribute to the building of a more just and humane world). These are qualities that Marygrove has always tried to instill in its students. These nominees must have made significant contributions to and/or exhibit demonstrated leadership in one or more of the following areas:

  • professional, educational or artistic endeavors
  • the community through government service and/or civic organizations (such as Lions Club, City Planning Commissions, government committees, etc.)
  • political action, social justice or volunteer activities in schools, hospitals, etc.
  • Marygrove College

Based on the number of qualified applicants, up to seven awards will be given annually. For one of these awards, special consideration will be given to alums who graduated within the last 15 years. All nominations will remain on file and will be reconsidered the following year.

The Distinguished Alumni Awards will be presented on Friday, September 16, 2006, at a special recognition event during Homecoming weekend.

ISSUES IN DETROIT MINISTRY
CLASS TO DEBUT AT MARYGROVE

Marygrove recently received a check for $25,000 from Fr. Gary Schulte of St. Sylvester’s Parish to begin funding a graduate course titled Issues in Detroit Ministry. The course will be aimed at helping seminarians and future urban leaders explore and evaluate the racial, economic and political issues that have resulted in the Detroit we know today. (more)

As future religious leaders, it is important that these students have factual information, be involved in critical analysis and be able to promote multicultural styles of leadership in the parishes and communities they will serve. The course, to be taught by Dr. Frank Rashid, professor of English, Dr. Thomas Klug, associate professor of History, and Jesse Cox, director of Campus Ministry, will be held at Marygrove and will include a major service learning component. MARYGROVE STUDENTS RECEIVE HIGH HONORS AND AWARDS

At Honors Convocation 2006, held Sunday, March 26, a number of students were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements and service to the college. The following individuals were lauded with High Honors and College-wide Awards. (more)

Marie Louise DeMarco McCleod Scholarship
Rachel Ferguson - This Scholarship is granted to the first year full-time student with the highest GPA.

Sr. John Clement Hungerman Scholarship
Ernest Mavunga - Established in 1983, this scholarship is awarded to a sophomore or junior who exemplifies Sr. Hungerman’s interests and ideals.

Emmet and Frances Tracy Scholar Award
Kathleen Cavanaugh and VieAnna Mattox - This scholarship is awarded to a returning Marygrove student who has exhibited academic and leadership excellence, and high ethical standards of conduct.

St. Catherine Medal/Margaret DeSantis Scholarship
Amy Pavlov - This award is given to a sophomore or junior who has performed outstanding service to the College or has established the best record for progressive achievement.

Distinguished Student
Jeffery Ashmore - This award is given to an outstanding graduating senior for his/her academic excellence, leadership ability, and service to the community.

  • In addition, six students received the Iota Gamma Alpha award for their outstanding leadership and exemplary volunteer service to the College and the community and their 3.5 or higher GPA .
  • Thirty-nine full-time students who have been named to the Marygrove Dean’s List for at least three consecutive semesters and part-time students who have been named to the Marygrove Dean’s List for at least six consecutive semesters made the National Dean’s List.
  • Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities is a national award given to the top 35 full-time juniors or seniors who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better and at least 24 credit hours at Marygrove.
  • Twenty-three graduating seniors also made the Kappa Gamma Pi, National Catholic Honor Society.
  • Besides these college-wide awards, students were recognized for 25 departmental awards.

Congratulations to each and every honoree. Marygrove is proud of you!

MARYGROVE TO HOST "FOCAL POINT" - A VIDEO STUDY WORKSHOP, JUNE 19-23, 2006

DAFT, (Digital Arts, Film & Television), is conducting an intensive week of "hands-on" video study for adults and mature high school students, called Focal Point, on the Marygrove campus, June 19-23, 2006. In the workshop, students will have an opportunity to work with video from conception to finished product in one week, as the course covers camera operation, script writing, storyboarding, special effects and non-linear editing. DAFT, an educational non-profit organization supporting teachers and students, has produced this workshop in Southeast Michigan for over 30 years. Students of all skill levels are welcome and course work can be geared to accommodate specific interests and needs. Out-of-town students can be referred to affordable lodging in the area.

Location/Registration/Information:
Focal Point meets June 19-23, 2006, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the Liberal Arts Building at Marygrove College, 8425 W. McNichols, Detroit, MI 48221.

The workshop features professional instructors from the field including:
John Prusak, an award-winning cinematographer who taught media production for over 30 years and now teaches video and animation at Wayne State University.
Dick Rockwell, a telecommunications instructor for Royal Oak Schools. He has won awards as a producer and director.
Steve Julin, a certified trainer for AVID and Final Cut Pro video editing software. He has authored the textbook AVID Express Pro Power!
Annette Alexander-Frank, an art and video teacher with over 20 years’ experience teaching animation.
Thomas Mansell, a video editor with degrees in telecommunications and creative writing.

Topics Covered:
Scriptwriting, storyboarding, camera operation, editing, graphics, special effects and digital audio manipulation. Demonstrations by professionals and presentations by guest artists will also be added to the rich mix. Footage is recorded using MiniDV video cameras and is edited on Mac computers running Final Cut software. Student productions will be shown on the final day at a screening for friends and family.

Fees for Focal Point:
The tuition is $600 and includes all instruction, use of equipment, most materials, lunch, a compilation DVD of all student videos and a Focal Point T-shirt. University credit is available through Central Michigan University. Continuing Education Units apply to educators.

KITCHEN AND DINNING ITEMS FOR SALE TO SUPPORT SCHOLARSHIPS

Know anyone starting out on their own that is looking for kitchen and dining equipment for their new home or apartment, or even someone who would like to have some nice items for entertaining?

Sale of items from the Foods and Nutrition Department continues. Some of the nicer items that were used in the Home Management House and for Meal Management are now for sale.

Items for sale include a variety of crystal stemware, goblets, sherbets and parfait glasses; different sizes of crystal plates, plain and some with very nice etched designs; a set of green "depression" glass goblets and sherbets; and beautiful serving dishes and decorative pieces. Various sets of good china, a variety of silver or silver-plated pieces; very good table linens; and silver serving forks, cake servers, knives and demitasse spoons will soon be on sale as well.

All beautiful items that could be used for wedding, anniversary, shower or birthday gifts if not in your own home. Please spread the word among your friends and alumnae!

Proceeds from the sale go to the IHM-So Bheas Club Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is only $3,000 away from its goal of being an endowed scholarship. You can also contact Sr. Ann if you wish to make a monetary donation to the scholarship fund.
