SUMMER 2007 FESTIVAL OF DANCE
The 38th Festival of Dance kicks off June 25, 2007.  The Festival provides a total of three weeks of daily, quality instruction in various dance techniques.  The first session of classes is June 25 - 29, and the second is August 6 - 17. It allows for Michigan students to study with the best instructors in their own backyard. During each session, international master artists will teach 90-minute technique classes in ballet, pointe, jazz, hip-hop, Dunham Technique, and stretch and tone.

Master artists for this summer include Gregory Robinson, Associate Director, Dayton Ballet; Mari Jo Irbe, Rehearsal Director, River North Chicago Dance Company; and Daniel Catanach, Artistic Director, Urban Ballet Theater.  Classes are geared for students age 12 and up and those of at least an intermediate level. More information is available on the Web site at Festival_of_Dance, or by contacting Judith Molina at (313) 927-1306 or jmolina@marygrove.edu.

INSTITUTE FOR ARTS-INFUSED EDUCATION HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL SUMMER INTENSIVE ON AUGUST 13 - 15.
Marygrove College will offer a three-day summer intensive workshop for educators and artists on August 13 - 15.  Titled “Community Arts Partnerships-Modeling Innovative Methods in English Language Arts Education,” the College’s Institute for Arts-Infused Education (IAIE) will provide collaborative hands-on sessions with the Detroit Institute of Art, Michigan Opera Theatre and Matrix Theatre Company.

Participants will learn how to use the arts to teach other non-art subjects as well as alternative assessment tools and brain-based education information. Participants can receive 1.6 SBCEUs for attending all three days of the intensive. The cost of the program is $50 and participants can register by calling 866-903-3033.  The intensive training will be held in the Madame Cadillac Building on Marygrove’s campus, 8425 West McNichols, Detroit, MI 48221.

Marygrove established the Institute for Arts-Infused Education in January 2006 to improve K-12 students’ successful progress through the core curriculum in partnership with several accomplished community arts organizations. The Institute promotes the integration of the arts into the core curriculum and creates innovative models for teaching the core curriculum.  Teachers and local artists, including dancers, mimes, musicians and fine artists, collaborate in classroom teaching.

Mary Lou Greene, director, IAIE, explained that arts-infused education “is not the teaching of art but rather the teaching of reading, science and math, the core K through 12 curriculum, using the arts.  Marygrove College has a long and successful track record of teacher training on the bachelor’s and master’s levels.  The College also has a long-standing dedication to in-service and pre-service teacher training.”

The Institute for Arts Infused Education is funded through a generous grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.  For more information, contact Mary Lou Greene at (313) 927-1853 or mgreene@marygrove.edu.

JOSH WHELAN, FROM TAYLOR’S KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL, SIGNS WITH MARYGROVE COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL PROGRAM
Josh Whalen, a senior forward from Taylor’s Kennedy High School, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball next season at Marygrove College in Detroit.  The 6’5” Whalen led a young Kennedy team to an 8-13 record in 2006-07.  He averaged 12.8 points per game and 5.7 rebounds his senior year. Bankhoops.com ranks Whalen number 23 in the state among small forwards.  Steve Bell from Bankhoops.com considers Whalen “a capable scorer with decent perimeter skills who should develop into a very good NAIA player.”

“We are very excited that Josh has committed to Marygrove and our program to continue his education and basketball career,” said Marygrove’s Athletic Director/Head Coach Dave Sichterman.  We look forward to Josh joining the Mustang family and becoming a student-athlete on our campus.”

THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY'S "RELAY FOR LIFE" IS JUNE 23 ON MARYGROVE'S CAMPUS
Are you ready to relay? The American Cancer Society’s 4th annual “Relay For Life” of Detroit will take place on June 23 - 24, 2007, starting at 10:00 a.m at Marygrove College. Detroiters can join the fight against cancer at this community event that will feature food, entertainment and activities for children.

The Relay For Life is the Society’s signature event and is dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds to fight cancer. Teams of family, friends and co-workers raise dollars by walking in this overnight relay.  Cancer survivors are recognized and honored as they lead a special victory lap around the track in honor of their triumph over cancer. A survivor’s breakfast takes place on site after the victory lap.  The Relay For Life also offers a poignant “Luminaria” ceremony at dusk to honor those that have faced cancer.

“Relay For Life brings together cancer survivors, caregivers, families and friends to celebrate life, while honoring those who have lost their cancer battle,” said Chiara C. Clayton of the American Cancer Society. “It is truly inspiring to witness the teamwork and effort that Detroit residents put into making the Relay a success each year.”

The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the Society has 13 regional divisions and local offices in 3,400 communities, involving millions of volunteers across the United States. For more information, visit www.cancer.org.   For more information about the Detroit Relay For Life, contact Chiara C. Clayton at (248) 483-4316 or chiara.clayton@cancer.org.

HAVE A SEAT RETURNS – NOVEMBER 8, 2007!
Due the popularity and success of the past two years, Marygrove College will again host Have A Seat…and more! Chair Auction and Strolling Dinner on Thursday, November 8, 2007. The occasion commemorates the founding of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1845, as well as the founding of Marygrove in 1927, which they continue to sponsor.

This exciting fundraiser will feature the work of local and national artists who have transformed vintage Marygrove chairs and other items into collectible works of art. Artists who’ve confirmed that their work will be part of the Founder’s Day celebration include Charles McGee, Gilda Snowden, Nora Chapa Mendoza and Shirley Woodson.

This year, we will have something for everyone as we are focusing on the “and More!” aspect of the event. Auction items will include such non-chair items as paintings, sculptures, gift certificates and other non-art related items.

Marygrove has embraced the strategic vision of fostering Urban Leadership. This means that the College is committed to developing its students into professional and community leaders as well as taking an institutional leadership role to revitalize Detroit. For this reason, we are asking the artists to consider reflecting on their own perception of Urban Leadership when they create their piece.

Join us for this fun-filled event and your support will help Marygrove College turn today’s students into tomorrow’s urban leaders.

We are currently looking for more committee members and contributing artists. In addition, if you are interested in sponsoring the event, donating an item or gift certificate from your place of business or attending the event, please contact Maureen Leonard at mleonard@marygrove.edu or (313) 927-1308.
