Where can my Major take me?
If you have ever asked yourself this question, you should know that Marygrove’s Career Services offers students a variety of tools and resources to help you discover your strengths and weaknesses, your likes and dislikes, and they will help you cultivate your unique career vision.
Linking a Major to Possible Careers
Choosing a major does not lock you into one specific career, but can help to shape your career vision and build an assortment of relevant experiences. Career Services can help you link your experiences both inside and outside the classroom to your career vision. Knowing how to tell your career story is half the battle in getting a job.
Below is a link to What Can I Do With This Major? This tool offers strategies students can use to build their experiences and skillset outside of the classroom to make themselves more marketable to prospective employers.
It’s Not All About Your Major
A successful career depends on more than your major or degree. Your credentials are important, but so are the experiences and skills you develop along the way. In addition to your major, there are other powerful ways to shape your appeal to a future employer:
Minor or Concentration – Choose a minor or concentration is another opportunity to develop skills and expertise. If your degree is in something that the job market might not readily be looking for, choosing a minor or concentration that builds sought-after skills can really help you launch your career.
Experiential Learning or learning from experience are opportunities where you can apply the concepts you learn in class to a real world situation. Experiential learning can include internships, Co-Op experiences, volunteer work, team projects, and other hands-on-work.
Participating in internship opportunities while at Marygrove is one of the best ways to help you develop and apply your skills. Not only do you gain real-world experience, but employers get to see you in action – and that can lead to references and job opportunities.
Marygrove offers a wealth of volunteer experiences through our emphasis on Service Learning and Urban Leadership. Student government and Greek organizations offer excellent leadership opportunities. In addition, there are many ways to engage in the community around you.
