Mustang Men's Basketball News 02-23-08 Mustangs come up short in season finale
The visiting Falcons started the game on a 16-6 run and did not let up for much of the first half. The Falcons forced the Mustangs into poor shots and early foul trouble, which is the remedy for success at any level. The Mustangs, led by junior forward Nick Roberts (pictured above) staged a late run and found their way back to a six point halftime deficit, 28-22. The second half mirrored the start of the first with Taylor-Fort Wayne jumping on top early. The Mustangs did not back down as senior forward Curtis Leavy hit a couple key 3-pointers to bring the Mustangs within two. From there, senior guard LaGary Brundidge nailed a game-tying 3-pointer just under two minutes to play and forced a Falcon timeout. The Mustangs could not take the lead as the visiting Falcons showed tremendous poise as they closed the door on the Mustangs with key free-throws. The Mustangs final 3-point attempt to tie fell just shy. The Mustangs were led by senior guard Curtis Leavy with 19. Leavy was followed by junior forward Nick Roberts and freshman forward Justin McKinney who each chipped in 11. Roberts also added nine rebounds, six assists, two steals, and a block. "Although this season did not go as well as we planned, I am still proud of my young men", said men's head coach Glen Donahue. "These boys struggled through a transition season, but did not give up", he added. The Marygrove College Athletic Department congratulates the Mustangs on their season and looks forward to a great offseason and start to the 2008-09 season. 02-21-08 Mustang men fall short in USCAA showdown
The second half would start off with a huge Rochester run that would put the Mustangs down by as many as 21. The Mustangs, as they have shown all season, did not give up. Led by senior Curtis Leavy, the Mustangs went on a 14-3 run to get within two possessions. Unfortunately, the sharp-shooting Warriors would not let the Mustangs creep any close as they continued to bury shots from downtown (9 made). The Mustangs would eventually fall 73-57. Mental lapses and missed shots were to blame on this day. The Mustangs shot a mere (40%) from the charity stripe and (38%) from the floor for the game. The Mustangs uncharacteristically got outrebounded by their opponent, 49-30. "We did not play our toughest game", said men's coach Glen Donahue. "We have to bring the intensity for a team of this caliber." The Mustangs were led by senior Curtis Leavy with 19 points. Leavy was followed in double-figures by freshman forward Justin McKinney with 11. McKinney (pictured above) also contributed 13 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks in the Mustang loss. The Mustangs look to close out the season with a win on Saturday in the final game of the season. The second half is always the better half of Mustang basketball this season and it proved to be no more evident than on Monday night. The Mustangs held the Tigers from Grace Bible to a mere 30 points in the second half en route to scoring 47 of their own, eventually winning the game 85-73. The second half was jammed packed with defensive stops for the Mustangs. They stopped the Tigers in their tracks with an amazing eight blocks and 11 steals on the night. Another key to victory was the great ball control by the Mustangs. The Mustangs limited their turnovers to a dismal seven while forcing the opponent to cough the ball up 25 times. The Mustangs were paced once again by the hot hand of senior Curtis Leavy (pictured above). Curtis shot 10-of-16 overall, including 5-of-8 from downtown en route to 25 points. Curtis was not done there as he also chipped in an impressive five assist and four rebounds. Not far behind Curtis was stat stuffing freshman Justin McKinney. Justin totalled 12 points, six rebounds, five assists, five blocks, and two steals. Two other players were also in double-figures for the Mustangs as junior forward Nick Roberts had 15 and senior guard LaGary Brundidge added 12. The Mustangs eagerly await Thursday's opponent Rochester College. The Mustangs let a 12 point lead slip away into a loss in the first meeting between the teams this year at Rochester. Coach Donahue is confident his Mustangs can steal a win against the USCAA power Warriors from Rochester if they limit turnovers once again. "You can rest assure when a team limits their turnovers to single digits it puts them in a great opportunity to win", said Donahue. "Our boys played tough tonight, especially in the second half. I hope that spills over into Thursday as we have a tough match up ahead", Donahue added. The game will be played at Cornerstone School, Groves Campus (Old DePorres High School) this Thursday. Tip is set for 8pm. For complete directions scroll to the bottom of our men's schedule page. 02-16-08 Slow start foils upset bid for the Mustangs
The Mustangs would not let up. "We came out and were ready to play in the second half", Donahue said. "It could have been easy for the guys to give up after a demoralizing first half, but they didn't and they stuck right with the opposing team the rest of the game", Donahue added. "We have to limit our mistakes and there is no excuse for that at this level", he went on to say. The Mustangs could not find a rhythm offensively early on and it closed the gate early with a 26 point deficit at the half. Marygrove would not falter in the second as they were only outscored by five points in the second. In the end, a win was not in the cards for the Mustangs as they fell 87-56. The Mustangs had three players in double-figures on the day. Freshman center Eric Johnson (pictured) and senior forward Curtis Leavy paced the Mustangs with 11 each. They were closely followed by freshman Justin McKinney with 10. Freshman Eric Johnson also added seven rebounds and two blocks on the day. After the long ride back to Detroit, the Mustangs must get rest and begin to prepare for Grace Bible College on Monday. The Mustangs lost to Grace Bible earlier this season in Grand Rapids. Coach Donahue hopes home court advantage will come in to play as the Mustangs look to snag a victory. The game will be played at University of Detroit Jesuit High. Tip is set for 8pm. Scroll to the bottom of the men's schedule page for directions. 02-11-08 Leavy named Player of the Week
This past week Curtis averaged 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals. That includes Curtis' 4 for 8 shooting from 3-point range against Rochester College on Monday. "Curtis has been a leader of late and that is one reason why we are playing a tougher brand of basketball", said Donahue. This week, Curtis and the Marygrove Mustangs take on Trinity Christian from Illinois. Trinity is expected to be one of the toughest opponents the Mustangs have faced all year and coach Donahue is looking for Curtis and the rest of his Mustangs to rise to the occasion. 02-11-08 Mustang lead evaporates into Rochester win
The Mustangs continued to pour it on offensively and eventually held a 12-point lead with (1:33) to go in the first half. Rochester, led by Odai Baylor with 24, climbed back into the game as they connected on three straight possessions to end the half. The Mustangs could not limit their turnovers late in the half which resulted in a mere six-point lead at the half, 49-43. The second half started with both teams battling tough defensively and forcing many bad shots for both squads. Marygrove could not find a rhythm offensively to begin the second as they struggled from the floor shooting (28%) in the half. The Marygrove lead would finally disappear when Rochester guard Rob Fragoso stole an inbound pass and laid it in with (11:45) to play in the game. From there, the Mustangs consecutive lay-ups and Rochester never looked back, eventually winning 76-66. The Mustangs were paced by senior forward Curtis Leavy with 22 on the evening. He was followed in double-figures by fellow senior Mike Hawkes with 14. Both Curtis and Mike connected on four - three pointers apiece. Freshman forward Justin McKinney also chipped in with seven assists and five steals. The Mustangs face Rochester once again next Thursday (02/21) 8pm at University of Detroit Jesuit. For complete directions scroll to the bottom of our men's schedule page. Before the Mustangs host their rematch with Rochester, they must first go on the road to play Trinity Christian (IL) on Saturday. Men's coach Glen Donahue expects an extremely tough match up against Trinity Christian as he begins to prepare for the Mustang road trip this afternoon. 02-09-08 Cold shooting leads to Mustang defeat
"We played a tough game but I do not think we took the ball inside enough", added Donahue of the (5/25) shooting from three-point land. ed that there was not a real lack of aggressiveness today as the Mustangs cleaned up on the glass with 52 rebounds on the day. That included an amazing 30 offensive rebounds. "The offensive rebounds really kept us in it today despite our shooting", said Donahue. "If we hit our shots, we had a real good opportunity today to pick up a victory against an extremely talented team", Donahue said of the opponent Grace Bible. Despite the loss, Donahue remained optimisitic about the Mustangs upcoming schedule. "We have put together some fine practices of late and we are really running our offense well. If we can hit our shots, we can play with anybody. We have a tough schedule to close the season but I believe in our men and we will close the season on a good note", added Donahue. Overall, three Mustangs reached double-figures on the afternoon. Senior guard Mike Hawkes (pictured above) paced the Mustangs with a 17-point effort, including shooting (4/7) from downtown. He followed by fellow senior Curtis Leavy with 14 and freshman big man Eric Johnson who add 13 points and 10 rebounds (10 offensive). “We limited our turnovers today once again which is a sign we are becoming comfortable with each other in our offensive sets. We have to continue to do this on Monday against Rochester College if we want to come out with a win against one of the better teams we will see all year ”, said Donahue. The Mustangs take on USCAA #1 ranked Rochester College on Monday in Rochester Hills. The game is set for a 7pm tip-off. 02-04-08 Hard work pays off for senior Mike Hawkes
"Mike demonstrated his will to win as he played 110% every possession", said Coach Donahue. "He has shown steady improvement this season, especially over the course of the last five-to-six games ", added Donahue of Hawkes. "He had a terrific all-around game, as did many of my players. Mike has enjoyed a great career here at Marygrove and I hope he continues to improve as the season nears the end". He is a model young man to coach", added Donahue. Overall, the senior amassed 10 points (2-3 from beyond the arc), three rebounds, and two assists on the day. The entire men's coaching staff congratulates Mike on his achievement. Hawkes looks to add to his performance when the Mustangs take on the University of Northwestern Ohio Wed. 02/06 at 8pm. 02-02-08 Mustang men fall short in shootout
"We did not execute our game plan and get up tight on their shooters", said men's skipper Glen Donahue. "We had a few men that played well today, but I know we have better in us". "We cannot afford to relax defensively like this on Wednesday against an equally tough opponent", Donahue added. The Mustangs exchanged shots early in the first half with the Lions until a (19-4) Lion run spread the game wide-open. The first half run by the Lions was the key point in the game as each team would exchange buckets and go toe-to-toe the rest of the way. The (19-4) burst by Finlandia would ultimately prove to be too much in the end for the Mustangs as they fell by 21. The Mustangs were paced by freshman forward Justin McKinney (pictured above) with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists. He was mirrored in the point column by freshman center Eric Johnson who also contributed with 14 points on the day. As a team, the Mustangs played physical and out rebounded their opponent 42-35, including owning an edge on the offensive glass 15-10. Finlandia was led by guard Tyler Gordon with 35, which included going (7-11) from downtown. Tyler was followed by fellow guard Ryan Artley who added 22 while going (6-11) from beyond the arc. The Mustangs look to erase this defeat when they take on the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers on Wednesday (02/06) at 8pm. The game is the second half of a home double-header with the Lady Mustangs tipping off at 6pm. Both games will be played at Cornerstone School, Groves Campus. Detailed directions are located at the bottom of the men's and women's schedule page.
01-16-08 Mustangs win second game of season
The Mustangs set the tone early with an 18-10 run that lasted for the first ten minutes of the game. The early run was paced by Seniors Mike Hawkes and Curtis Leavy (pictured on left). From there the Crusaders of Great Lakes Christian College settled in and finished the half only down 12. The second half was much of the same as the pesky Crusaders hung in the game throughout. Both teams forced many turnovers that led to easy baskets. The teams continued to exchange shots for the first 16:00 of play in the second half. In the end the Mustangs would have one final knockout blow in them as they eventually put the Crusaders down for the count. The Mustangs won the game by a final score of 94-73. Overall, the evening went well for Coach Donahue and his Mustangs. Four Mustangs reached double-figures as Curtis Leavy led the way with 17 points. He was followed by Justin McKinney with 14, LaGary Brundidge with 12, and Mike Hawkes with 11. “It was a mess of a game, but a win is a win”, said Coach Donahue referring to the nature of the victory last night. The Mustangs now look to preserve their 1-game winning streak as they travel to the always tough Falcons of Taylor-Ft. Wayne. The Falcons are (10-7) on the year, four of them coming by 30 points or more. The game will at 3pm on January 26th in Ft. Wayne, IN.
01-12-08 Racers too much for Mustangs
To begin the game the Mustangs fell behind early as the Racers jumped out to a seven point advantage within the first couple minutes of action. The Mustangs would keep fighting as they pulled within three points at 17-14. From there the Racers went on an 8-0 run over the next 4:12 of the first half. The remaining ten minutes of the first half was a back-and-forth battle between the teams as the Mustangs held their ground and went into halftime trailed 46-33. The second half was much of the same for Marygrove. The Mustangs cut the deficit many times in the second half, but never got within striking distance of the Racers. Collectively, the Mustangs shot (27.5%) from the floor in the half, including shooting 3-14 (21.4%) from behind-the-arc. Despite poor shooting the Mustangs still put up 71 points on the afternoon which pleased Coach Donahue, “71 points is a fine total to have, just not when the other team tallies 100, he added lightheartedly.” Coach Donahue also recognized that the Mustangs were out-hustled and out-rebounded by the Racers of Northwestern Ohio. “Any time you give up 100 points it is because the other team hustled more.” Before the interview was over, Coach Donahue wanted to compliment the fine work of his 6’7” freshman center Eric Johnson (pictured). “That young man has impressed me with the advances he has made to his game this season”, Donahue stated of Johnson. “His skills are raw and have never been learned at any varsity level, because this is Eric’s first year playing organized basketball”. Standing at 6’7”, the monster freshman had an impressive day totaling 12 points and 11 rebounds, while adding both a steal and a block in just 24 minutes of action. Next up for the Mustangs is a road trip Wednesday to take on the Great Lakes Christian Crusaders.
