On Thursday, April 17, I had the distinct honor of representing Marygrove College at a gathering of Catholic educators at the Catholic University of America to listen to the message of Pope Benedict XVI regarding the role of Catholic educational institutions in the U.S. I feel blessed to have been able to participate. While the media attention and crowds fostered an aura of historic importance around the Holy Father’s first visit to the United States, it was his soft-spoken affirmation of the centuries-old mission of Catholic educational institutions that moved my spirit and precipitated serious reflection. I was particularly impressed that the most spontaneous and most enthusiastic applause greeted the Pontiff’s call for the Catholic community to find ways to continue to serve the people of the inner cities, those of less economic means, and immigrants.
