      The Graduate Admissions Department answers questions you may have about the college, provides tours, attends college fairs, supplies admissions applications, and accepts applications. As soon as we receive your completed application, you are assigned a personal admissions counselor to help you through the admissions process.

      Eligibility for Admissions

      Marygrove College graduate programs are open to full-time or part-time students who fulfill the graduate admission requirements. To be eligible for a particular course of study, students must be formally admitted to the Graduate Division of the College.

      Admission to graduate study at Marygrove is selective. The student must have completed an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. Marygrove requires a minimum grade point average of 3.0/4.0 (“B”) in all graduate and undergraduate work. Specific entrance requirements may vary by program; these are described in detail in the program sections of the Graduate Catalog.

    • Undergraduate Admissions Requirements

      Marygrove College follows a “rolling admissions” policy, which means we accept applications all year and you may enter the College at the beginning of any term. However, it is best to apply at least two months prior to expected term of entry.

      Your personal admissions counselor will guide you through the steps in the admissions process as soon as we receive your completed application.

      All applicants must submit the following materials to the Office of Admissions at Marygrove College:

      1. A completed Marygrove College Undergraduate Application and the non-refundable fee of $25.00 (check or money order).
      2. An official copy of your high school transcript completed by the last high school attended. Results of your ACT examination are also required.
      3. All official transcripts, from each college or university you have attended. If you have earned fewer than 24 semester credits, a high school record is also required and used in reaching admissions decisions.

      NOTE: The Admissions Committee reserves the right to request additional information or documentation deemed helpful in evaluating applicants for admissions, e.g., supplemental references, personal interview, additional testing, etc.

      NOTE: All official documents submitted during the admissions process become the property of Marygrove College and cannot be returned to the student. If a student does not enroll in the term for which he/she applied, these documents will remain in our files for two academic years following the term for which they were submitted. If the application is not reactivated in two years, the documents will be destroyed.

      Students who do not meet regular admission standards may be offered the Admission Test.

      Please submit all required information at least three weeks before the final registration period for the term in which you want to start classes. However, we strongly urge you to complete the steps at least two months before the beginning of the term. We will consider extending an Offer of Admissions to any student who is qualified by our admissions standards.

      Marygrove College's Children’s Center offers a safe, healthy, day care environment for your child to grow academically, socially, emotionally and physically. It provides inexpensive child care for all students, staff and faculty. It currently does not provide child care for the general public.

      The Center is for children 2 ½ years old (and fully toilet trained) to 12 years old.

    • Development Opportunities

      Cooperative Education and Internships
      Cooperative Education and Internships offer qualifying students the opportunity to examine their chosen field first hand. Cooperative Education opportunities allow students to have a paid work experience while earning academic credit. These opportunities require the approval of a faculty advisor. Internship experiences may be paid or unpaid and range from short-term projects to full-time work assignments lasting the length of a term. Both programs enable you to apply the theories you have learned to work situations and to obtain valuable on-the-job experience. Interested students should contact career services for full information.

    • Degree Requirements
      General Information

      Student Responsibility
      In order to earn a degree at Marygrove, you will need to follow all the procedures, meet all the general and specific requirements, and abide by all the academic regulations that appear in this catalog.

      You should normally follow the degree requirements in effect at the time of your first registration at Marygrove, as long as you earn your degree within six years. You may, however, apply for graduation using the requirements of any catalog in effect while you attended the College, just as long as it is not more than 6 years old.

      For professional certification, you must meet the current requirements set forth by the governmental and/or accrediting agencies that regulate certification in your area.

      Because your degree is, finally, your degree, it is also your responsibility to learn and follow the requirements, policies, and procedures affecting your program. You should consult your academic advisor regularly to help verify that all degree requirements are being met in a timely fashion.

      Undergraduate Degree Requirements
      Undergraduate degree requirements are of two kinds: college degree requirements that are binding on all programs and specific degree requirements established by various departments or academic units that award specialized degrees (for example, the Bachelor of Social Work or Bachelor of Business Administration).

      Below are the college degree requirements for Marygrove associate and bachelor degrees followed by an overview of specific requirements for particular degrees. Consult the program section of the catalog for the specific information about degree options and requirements in your area of study.

      Developmental/Foundational Studies
      Marygrove College believes that all students who are capable of benefiting from higher education should be provided with study and training appropriate to their needs, interests, abilities, and aspirations.

      In keeping with this philosophy, Marygrove offers a series of courses that we group under the title Developmental/Foundational Studies. These courses are designed to insure adequate preparation in learning strategies, writing, and mathematics for those students with the potential for success in higher education.

      Students are evaluated for placement into reading, writing and mathematics using ACT scores, Marygrove Placement Test results, and/or transfer credits. If your placement results indicate the need for course work to strengthen these competencies, you will be required to enroll in one or more of the following courses:

      LS 105 Strategies for College Learning
      MTH 100 Algebra
      ENG 107

      Introduction to Writing If your Competency test results indicate a need for more intense strengthening in mathematics, you will be required to enroll in the Developmental course MTH 099, entitled Pre-Algebra, before registering for MTH 100. Credits earned in this course, though counted for financial aid benefits, do not count in the GPA or toward the total number of hours required for a degree.

      If you require additional skill building in basic mathematics, you will be referred to Student Support Services to complete the Basic Math Workshop, which carries no college credit.

      Time limit for completion of developmental and/or foundational courses
       If you are a new student (i.e., this is your first time in college or you are transferring less than 12 credit hours), you will need to complete all developmental and foundational courses as required by competency testing within the first 44 credits earned at Marygrove. If you have transferred 12 or more semester hours, you are required to complete these requirements within your first 36 hours taken at Marygrove. If the courses are not completed by that time, you will not be permitted to register for courses other than the developmental and foundational courses required in your program.

      General Education
      A complex array of political, economic, social, scientific, and technical forces continually transforms our world. Marygrove’s general education program engages these forces, providing opportunities to examine them from different disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives. Our objective is not only to disseminate information about forces that shape our world but also to intensify our critical thinking about them.

      Please take some time to review the 2013 Marygrove Commencement Information Booklets and other important information as soon as possible, since they contain important, time-sensitive information. Remember— you must use the links, as indicated, to complete the registration process and submit other appropriate paperwork to ensure that you meet the deadlines.

      Commencement Ceremony

      Saturday, May 11 • 11:00 a.m.

      Marygrove College • Outside of Liberal Arts Building

      Associate, Bachelor’s, and Master's degree candidates who have completed degree requirements for Spring/Summer 2012, Fall 2012, or Winter 2013 semesters are eligible to participate.

      Tickets are not required. Please plan to attend with your guests. You must arrive at Marygrove College, Madame Cadillac Building no later than 9:45 a.m. (continental breakfast 8:00-9:30 a.m. in Madame Cadillac Building). Marshals, identified by green robes and pins, will direct you to the area where you will robe and line-up.

      CAP, GOWN, HOOD AND TASSEL

      To participate in the academic procession and the Commencement Ceremony, you must:

      • Wear your cap, gown, hood and tassel and professional attire.
      • Refrain from wearing large, conspicuous jewelry.
      • Wear comfortable shoes (black), as walking briskly in the procession can be difficult.
      • Leave your personal belongings with one of your guests.

       

      PRESENTATION OF DEGREES

      When you assemble for the procession, you will receive a card with your name and degree. During the ceremony, designated readers will be at two podiums on stage. You will follow the Marshals to the podium, hand your card to the reader, and then proceed to the middle of the stage. If you have an unusual pronunciation to your name, make sure you let them know so your name can be pronounced correctly. You will receive your diploma case and congratulations from the Chairperson of the Board or the Marygrove College President.

       

      PHOTOGRAPHY

      A professional photographer will take a picture of each graduate as they receive their diploma. Information on purchasing these photographs will be available at the Commencement Ceremony.

      Guests may photograph/videotape in designated areas only.

       

      AWARDING OF DIPLOMAS

      During the ceremony, you will receive your diploma case. If you have satisfied your financial obligations to the College, you can pick up your diploma in the Enrollment Center, Liberal Arts Building, Room 120 on Friday, May 10, from 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, May 11, from 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. Proper picture ID is required for the release of diplomas - no exceptions. Diplomas not picked up will be mailed to your address of record within 4-6 weeks following the Commencement Ceremony. If you do not receive your diploma within that time frame, please call the Registrar’s Office at (313) 927-1238.

      STUDENT ACCOUNTS

      Any candidate with an outstanding balance will be able to participate (walk) in the Commencement Ceremony. All outstanding balances must be paid by Friday, April 19, 2012 or your diploma and official transcripts will be withheld until all outstanding balances are paid. If you have any questions regarding your account, contact the Cashier in the Enrollment Center at (313) 927-1227.
