FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM

Marygrove College has a long tradition of preparing committed, caring, effective  teachers. Teaching is an especially demanding, yet rewarding profession. Few professions ask so much of a person’s character and creativity, yet few careers give as much satisfaction in return.

An aspiring teacher who has completed a Bachelors Degree can earn the Master of Education (M.Ed.) Degree and a Michigan teaching certificate through the M.Ed. Plus Teacher Certification Program.  Graduate students welcome the collaborative learning environment at Marygrove, the small classes with personalized faculty engagement, and hands-on field experience in schools.  Upon completion of the program, graduates earn the Master of Education Degree (M.Ed.) and are recommended to the State of Michigan for the Provisional Teaching Certificate.

SPECIFIC PROGRAM INFORMATION

This program is intended for the graduate student who has already earned a Bachelor’s Degree with a major that can be certified for teaching. It is important for applicants to have a clear understanding of the levels they intend to teach, as the Elementary (Grades K-8) and Secondary (Grades 6-12) teacher certification programs have different requirements. Elementary classroom instruction is very different from middle and high school Secondary Level instruction.

Elementary (K-8) teaching majors include: Integrated Science, Language Arts, Mathematics and Social Studies.

Elementary minor: A minor in Elementary Education is also required for the Elementary program.

Secondary teaching majors now include: Art Education, Biology, English, Dance, History, Mathematics, Music, Political Science, and Social Studies.

Secondary minor: A teachable minor is required for the Secondary program except for Music and Visual Arts Education, which are group majors.  Available minors are Chemistry, English, French, History, Mathematics, Political Science, and Spanish

To allow timely completion, most Education courses are held on weekday evenings, and include weekend courses on Friday evenings and Saturdays throughout the year – Fall, Winter, and Summer sessions. Some undergraduate pre-requisite courses may only be offered at limited times.

Four phases of program progression guide students in the graduate Teacher Certification Program:

1. Exploratory, 2. Pre-Candidate, 3. Candidate, and 4. Student Teaching. Specific coursework is included in each Phase. The Program includes undergraduate pre-requisites, professional preparation course sequence, Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) requirements, one semester of full time student teaching in a classroom, and a cognate of specialization courses that complete the Master of Education Degree.

College Application

The Application process is initiated through the Graduate Admissions Office. Upon application to the College, prior major and minor coursework is approved through faculty review of transcripts. A graduate student Plan-of-Work is then created. Coursework is subject to time restrictions, and minimum grade point requirements must be met. Undergraduate liberal arts requirements must also be fulfilled. Admission to the College grants admission only into the Exploration Phase of the M.Ed. Plus Teacher Certification Program; acceptance into the Program by the Education Department must then be made through a formal application process.

Graduate teacher certification students who do not have approved undergraduate teaching majors or minors must complete these pre-requisites during the Exploration Phase.

Students in master’s degree programs may apply the first 18 hours of credit toward the requirement. An approved master’s degree or higher earned at any time also fulfills the credit hour requirement.

Non-degree students who wish to be recommended for Professional Certification may design their own 18-hour program using graduate Professional Development courses for approval by the Teacher Certification Officer who must also approve any adjustments to these programs.
