FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM
In response to the critical need for highly qualified special education teachers, Marygrove College has developed an accelerated program leading to a Master of Education in Teaching Degree and a teaching certificate with an endorsement in Learning Disabilities (SM). This program will provide a strong foundation in the knowledge, skills and dispositions considered foundational to all special education practitioners as well as those more specific to the area of learning disabilities.
The Master of Education in Teaching - TASC is a unique program designed for individuals who want to make a career change and who are committed to the TASC of educating children. The program places an emphasis on the mid-career changer who wants to transition into the teaching profession as a special education teacher. Many who enter the TASC program have had successful careers as substitute teachers in special education classrooms and are individuals who are comfortable with multiple course delivery formats, while others who enter have an interest in teaching special education but do not have a special education major completed.
SPECIFIC PROGRAM INFORMATION
The TASC Special Education program is intended for individuals who already have a bachelor’s degree with a major in English/Language Arts, Social Studies, Reading, Mathematics, or Integrated Science. Through the program, students are able to complete a “teachable” major in special education, while completing teacher certification and Master of Education courses. Students complete the program in a prescribed sequence with a cohort of colleagues who stay together for two and a half years. On completion, students receive a Master of Education degree and a teaching certificate with an endorsement in Learning Disabilities (SM).
