FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM
The Master of Education in Teaching - TASC is a unique program designed for individuals who want to make a career change and who are committed to the TASC of educating children. The program places an emphasis on the mid-career changer who wants to transition into the teaching profession as a secondary biology and/or chemistry teacher. Many who enter the TASC program have had successful careers in the health, biomedical, pharmaceutical, and automotive industries. Because the focus of the program is on preparation to teach biology and chemistry at the secondary level, many who enter have been researchers, nutritionists, engineers, mathematicians, and scientists, while others who enter are from social science and the humanities.
SPECIFIC PROGRAM INFORMATION
The TASC program is intended for individuals who already have a bachelor’s degree but hold a major in an area other than biology or teacher certification. Through the program, students are able to complete a “teachable” major in biology and “teachable” minor in chemistry, while completing teacher certification and Master of Education courses. Students complete the program in a prescribed sequence with a cohort of colleagues who stay together for just over two years. On completion, students receive a Master of Education degree, a major in secondary biology and minor in secondary chemistry, and are recommended for initial secondary certification with a secondary biology and chemistry endorsement.
This is a 95 credit hour degree program which consists of 55 hours of science coursework, 30 hours of education coursework, and 10 hours of student teaching field placement. Designed to accommodate a busy adult work schedule, courses are delivered online and in a traditional on-campus format.
